I don't know about other places but I know at whole foods, we take care of all the bullshit administration fee's, overhead costs etc etc. Not only that but most of our charities are local groups or our "big ones" are for local purposes as much as possible. By that, I mean like Whole Kids charity is used to put salad bars/gardens in schools. It's a company wide charity but all the money raised goes towards the schools in the community.

if all this stuff is such a huge deal then you can always. Y'know. Ask. The company is pretty transparent. Or you can pull a Randy and mumble your shame and blame the cashier for being rude and putting you on the spot.

ughh My work does the united way thing too and they put crazy pressure on the employees to donate. I have a note right now on my desk to return my slip which I haven't done in 16 years and not starting now. They really go over board with it.

My office actually takes up a "collection" for my boss for his birthday so that everyone buys him dinner and a birthday gift. I have abstained every year, on the third year of doing so the lady who organizes this thing finally snapped and asked me why I couldn't be bothered to donate. I pointed out the fact that both she and my boss are both making six figures, driving Cadillacs, and that they didn't need any donations from my hourly wage making ass for a birthday present.
