Someone explain this to me:
I constantly see Repubs having the talking point of, "Obama has set black people back 50 years." (Years may change.)
What in the actual fuck are they going on about?

I vote Republican, but don't consider myself one. Does that make sense?
I don't care about race relations. If you're an asshole, you're going to get treated like one by me no matter what color you are.
Though I did see a black woman in 6 Flags yesterday (Jersey) wearing a shirt that said "I matter".
I wanted to just go up to her and slap her in the face for some reason.
I think it is the idea of him staying stuff like "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon", or commenting on BLM. An ultra-conservative I work with feels that racism would be over if we all stopped talking about it. By having Obama comment, it means we have to start all over trying to ignore the issue.
This thread is going to be retarded. I can't wait.
Racism would go away if we stopped talking about it? Too bad we can't say the same for religion.
Not talking about it didn't stop the gays.
It's not that dumb. Morgan Freeman is a supporter of that line of reasoning, after all.
If you think of racism as a wound on society, it makes more sense. A wound won't heal as fast, or at all in some cases, if you keep picking and prodding at it. People need to let go of seeing racism everywhere they look so that it can fade into history, and society can heal.
This is always a great conversation from both sides.
(Ignorant participants of) Side A: Not realizing/won't recognize it's there
(Ignorant participants of) Part B: Crying wolf in any situation that doesn't go their way
Shoot me a PM (or post in fitness thread); idk what your goals are, etc. so yea I can't give advice on that low amount of info
For once, I have to agree with Abandon.
Yeah, because things like slavery, gay equality, women suffrage etc. would have all just sorted itself out if we ignored it. Not like people are actively working against equality or anything.
Ignoring a problem does not, contrary to belief, sort itself out. To use the health example with racism being a wound, cancer doesn't just disappear if you ignore it. It becomes worse. That's why you seek help and attempt to fix it.
Also, somewhat related, apparently the word "freshman" is offensive: http://totalfratmove.com/unc-newspap...clusive-nouns/
Where's an "I can't see color." AD .gif when you need one?
Not only is the concept dumb, but claiming somehow Obama talking about it has made things worse is even dumber. Like, we weren't talking and trying to fix race issues until he showed up, amirite?
It's certainly become more prominent during his term, but you can't really make any definitive correlation between his presidency and racial tensions erupting. It has been leading up to what it is now for a while.
I don't claim to know everything about race relations but racial injustice is fucking everywhere.
