Sorry Bane. You are the captain of this shitpile![]()
why would you even make this thread
It's not that talking about Race Relations is bad and shouldn't happen, as that would be terrible. Focus of a thread like this should be about identifying WHY things are bad and WHAT solutions can be applied, instead of asking if its a thing. Talking about anything else will just submerge the thread in a sea of opinionated bullshit.
I lean towards the idea that, denying race isn't a problem or that Obama's presidency hasn't been an uncloaking of the underlying problem, should not be a matter of opinion. The minute the republican majority leader proclaimed their only job was to impede Obama at every point, I realized the masks were off.
Man, there was a great piece written by someone here in another thread that described the history of the black movement in the northwest during(after/before?) great depression. I thought that was a great analysis, and something that could be looked at and applied today.
EVERYTHING IS OFFENSIVE
Seriously, there should be some trigger warnings /s. Although, isn't the title already a giant trigger warning?
Oh Lord.
This one again.
We could have a legitimate discussion about race relations but it seems like everyone just wants to piss all over the fact that this topic was even brought up, which puzzles the absolute fuck out of me, considering the (fairly) mature discussions about trans issues and feminism. I'm fairly sure there are plenty of people who don't believe that race is an issue, just like I know there are people who know that race is an issue.
So I don't really understand all of the dread for such a topic - if you don't want to get embroiled in a political debate about race relations then ... don't click the thread?
But I guess we're just gonna shitpost this topic into the thread graveyard.
Keep hearing people comparing racism to cancer and disease, with opposite requirements for treatment... but rascism is generally what you would describe as an irrational fear or disgust at a persons race, no? (not that race technically even exists in humans, but i digress...) if thats the case, wouldn't the overall treatment be similar to other irrational fears, such as phobias? gradual desensitizing by slowly introducing more elements of the thing the person fears in a calming setting to defuse that fear? if so, constantly poking at the topic is definitely not the right way to do it, just as how you don't cure someone's fear of spiders by throwing plastic spider models in their bed at night and showing them your awesome new tarantula pet. likewise, completely ignoring racism as a thing doesn't cure it, just as how spiders will exist and occasionally pop up in your shower to terrify you when your naked and defenseless regardless if you try to ignore their existence.
Though how you would go about desensitizing therapy in a non lab setting for the masses, i dont know. :s
Self-fulfilling prophecy, etc.
No more bitching about the topic. Don't like it, don't click it.
While there are undoubtedly people that legitimately fear other races, that's not the real problem. That will get better over time (slow though it may be). The problem is people in positions of power that have a belief that minorities are beneath them and seek to perpetuate the system that keeps minorities down and withhold opportunities. And as we all know, beliefs are incredibly hard to change.
Happens when people infantilize minorities and think them incapable of helping themselves or even understanding their own problems as well.
You could talk about affirmative action as one relatable topic that may be either a hindrance or a boon to minorities.
