If all you want to focus is physical stats (which is what you should be focusing on for winning those races) then feed to adult chocobos: 2x Sharug, 2x Vomp carrots (in this order).
Use "Carry Packages" as plan, and use "Take a walk" plus if you want "race with others" and lots and lots and lots of Watch over chocobo.
Make always sure your chocobo is always as max affection (message should say it regards you as a parent). If you don't get this message you're gonna get a reduced amount of points from plans and interactions alike.

After day 43 if you're satisfied with your physical stats (i.e. if they're at "outstanding" or "first-class" level) you can start to focus on mental stats, feed Zegham x2, Azouph x1 (in this order), change your plans to exibit to others and use "Tell a story" as interaction (and lots of watch over!)
If you wonder "why should I bother about mental stats?" they are kinda necessary for your Chocobo to learn abilities. For a racing chocobo you mostly want Canter (greatly increases your endurance) and Gallop (greatly increases your speed). Think of them like passive traits for your choco, not real abilities.
Keep in mind these are totally not necessary to win up to the CRA classic race.

Also, as far as I know feeding and doing "physical" stuff, doesn't affect mental stats, and the other way around.
This is not true for "care plans". A physical-alligned care plan is gonna lower your mental stats and vice-versa.
This kinda mean that from when you start focusing on mental stats (don't do it before day 43) you're going to slowly lower your physical stats, which is why I told you don't bother unless your choco is either at "Outstanding" or "First class" in them.
Once you've learned either Canter or Gallop you can spend the rest of your days focusing on physical stats once again, trying to get as high as possible.

To win the races up to CRA you "need" outstanding in both endurance and strenght.
Well this is actually not true, you can probably do it with "impressive" in both if you use speed apple, but the problem is that these ranks are very generic.
For instance "Impressive" goes from ~160 points to ~191. If you get exactely 160 in both that might be not enough, but 180 will probably be more than enough to win all races, with apples and a bit of luck.
That is to say that "Impressive" alone doesn't mean a lot, which is why I was saying with Outstanding it's almost 100% guaranteed you're gonna win all of them.

My chocobo isn't adult, it is adolescent. Also, it gets completely full after 2 vomp carrots and a sharug green.

Who is to say that feeding it doesn't raise mental stats? The guide on FFXIAH says these properties for Sharug and Azouph:

    From http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/32...-raising-v2/1/

Bunch Of Sharug Greens: satisfy the chocobo's hunger (moderate amount) and increase the chocobo's affection dramatically. Also raises a chocobo's physical stats slightly.

Bunch Of Azouph Greens: satisfy the chocobo's hunger (highest amount) and increase the chocobo's affection dramatically. Also raises a chocobo's mental stats slightly.

Yes, the instructions I reported are for ADULT, not adolescent.
Also remember to trade the sharug first, it's important.

I think you misunderstood me or I use a bad choice of words.
I meant that food that boosts physical traits (Sharug and Vomp for instance) doesn't lower mental traits and vice-versa.
The same doesn't apply to care plans. Plans which boost physical traits (for example carrying packages) DOES lower your mental traits, and vice-versa.

I read that Sharug increase Physical. vm0d's guide never says when to actually use "tell a story" to learn the abilities.
greens: i don't know anything about greens giving stats. i feed azouph because in the couple guides i read, they are listed as giving the most affection boost. i will adjust the guide if it is the case that azouph is mental and zegham is physical.

adolescent stage guide section: you shouldn't be running your chocobo completely out of health because that makes it sick ~50% of the time, so you should be doing nothing after the walks.

stories: i only included how to -get- the racing story KIs as a courtesy, what you need to do to teach them is beyond the scope of the guide. although i secretly spoilered a bunch of information at the end of the guide that you may want to read...

It's very difficult to run your chocobo out of stamina anyway, 99% of the time I would use my interactions until I got the "Chocobo needs more energy" message and 99% of the time my chocobo would still have a small sliver of energy left and would only rarely get sick as a result.

It's mentioned in the fishing guide that they weren't sure if trash items(kelp/rusty/etc) counted towards the 200 fish cap or not. I don't know if this is already known by most experienced fishers or not but they don't count towards the cap.

The "chocobo gets sick more often if you make him run out of energy/stamina" is a widespread thing but never got proven.
For all that matters I always ran my Chocobo out of stamina, sometimes multiple times in the same session (thanks to Chocolixir) and it got sick only twice throughout the raising (currently day 56 iir)

This doesn't prove anything, and it wasn't my intention to, but just like there are many people who claim the same exact theory vm0d shared here, many others say it's not true (among which Ninnian, who made the excellent chocobo guides on FFXIAH)

Also I don't see Tidis' point with "it's very difficult to run your choco out of stamina anyway", wut?
I could understand if you said it's "boring" or "annoying", but "difficult"?
You just whatever action you want to do, and once you don't have more energy left to do that action, you fill the rest with "watch over your chocobo".
This is almost necessary to keep your Chocobo affection capped (message has to say "considers you his parent"). If affection isn't capped, all the actions and plans you do on the chocobo, will have a reduced efficiency and will make him gain less points than it normally would.

I already explained what I meant by it's difficult to use up a chocobos energy, try a bit of reading comprehension.

Anyway it depends what is meant by run out of energy (empty bar) or energy so low you can't do any more interactions (small sliver leftover).

For "run out of energy" I of course mean empty bar and I don't see why would anybody mean anything else.
Unless you want to leave it on purpose because you believe the "no energy > higher chances of getting sick" why would anybody else leave some precious energy there that you could spend using "watch over chocobo"? Keeping affection capped is vital, and it can get hard sometimes to keep it at those levels.

As I already said, if affection is not capped, every interaction will produce smaller results (i.e. less stats points gained by the chocobo). Not sure this affects the points you get from manual interactions and food, but it surely affects those you get by the plans.

Ok I see you are missing my point, there gets to a point where you no longer have the energy left on the chocobo to watch over it even though the bar has a little sliver left in it.

It's basically something like this and it's all hypothetical but:

You need 2pts of energy to watch over the chocobo, you have 3 left, you watch over the chocobo and now have 1pt of energy remaining, there is a small amount left but not enough to watch over the chocobo again.

Are you sure about this? Around 60 days in this second chocobo and around 25+ for the first one and it never occurred to me. I could always completely deplete with the "watch over the chocobo" until the bar was completely empty (and was giving me the "you need more energy to perform that action" message).
Now the sample is very small so it could be a coincidence but... are you 100% sure about that?

I see your reasoning and it makes sense but since it never occurred to me I always assumed the "Watch over chocobo" type of interaction required the least amount possible of energy.

what i meant by "run out of energy" was not literally "zero energy" but the figurative interpretation "not enough energy to do any more interactions".

if your chocobo doesn't get sick, that's great. however, your question was should you spam "watch over" or "tell story".

as far as affection concerns go, i have been on carry packages for 2 weeks now and haven't lost a lvl of affection. that plan is supposed to be major affection depletion, but i've been fine only doing the 1-2 walks a day for care.

now, you said you are interested in your chocobo learning abilities. it has been reported that you can learn ability even with poor dsc, so if you're feeling lucky, spam "tell story".
