I just feel like the quantum realm is an easy dues ex machina that the audience is already familiar with to unfuck, or at least partially help unfuck, everything Thanos did and kill.

Alternate dimension where time and space are irrelevant. Ant-Man briefly passed into the quantum realm in the first movie but has no recollection of it. Doctor Strange briefly passed through it when the Ancient One mindfucked him. Other than that it hasn't been explained much in the MCU but I'm sure this, and possibly Captain Marvel, will introduce more.

Nah. Time Gem son. Quantum realm could play a part but that would be the long way. Using the Time Gem would be the easiest way for people to follow along.

they flat out state that being stuck in there could lead to him wandering time, etc. and then... he gets stuck. By the shittiest means possible (fucking thanos), but yeah. now im excited to see how he plays into End Game.
