It's the same plotline as the last few years or more.
The new deputy is a recycled actress.
I was kind of irritated they used the same flashback scenes repeatedly to fill time.
The darkness seems to be like a worse version of the croatoan virus.
I miss the monster of the week setup.
I read they aren't going to do a one-off episode, only plotcentric. Some of my faves are one-offs (tall tales, mystery spot, christmas ep, ghostfacers, monster movie, weekend at bobby's, etc.)

are you saying they are aren't doing procedural anymore at all? cause if so that requires a really strong plotline (since there's nothing else), closer to all the azazel stuff in the first few seasons. something i'd love to see for a final season, actually.

anyone else get super hopeful when they mentioned Lucifer's cage and Michael and Lucifer? Would love to see one or both broken out of the cage in an all out attempt against the Darkness and end the series with a Michael and Lucifer showdown

So far it's just rumors of the showrunners wanting to only have episodes that continue the plot.

They are going to follow the same format as the last few seasons:

1) Introduce the threat in the first episode
2) Spend two episodes getting their bearings straight
3) Do a few episodes of monster/problem of the week, Meta Episode, or Filler with some main arc revelation in the last 5 minutes of the episodes
4) Go back and do a few episodes that pertain to the main arc
5) Repeat 3-4 until the finale.

Pretty sure he dead. "Killed" in season 5. Metatron had a Gabriel in a reality warp deal for Castiel 2 years ago.

In Meta Fiction, Gabriel, who was believed to be dead, makes his presence known to Castiel through Casa Erotica 14, eventually manifesting in his motel room, asking him for help against Metatron. When Cas asked how he was alive, Gabriel said, "You can't take the trick out of the Trickster." He said he was in and cast out of "the safest place in the universe -- Heaven." When they decide to stop at a Gas-N-Sip, a group of Metatron-loyalist quickly descend upon them. Before they can enter the gas station Gabriel tells Castiel that he still has some of his Archangel mojo left, and will hold them off so Cas can make his escape. However Castiel realizes that the whole thing is an illusion, by the fact that he had ripped his coat earlier, but in the Gas-N-Sip there was no hole. Gabriel pleads with Cas to hear Metatron out, that he is really trying to help him. However he isn't able to specify how, as he only skimmed through his parts of script. Before Gabriel leaves, Cas asks him if he's really dead, but only gets an eyebrow wiggle from Gabriel before he disappears. Metatron later comments on how well Gabriel, being the Trickster, played out his part.
