ARGH! Trying to hook up old dvd/vcr combo to a tv with only component hookups.

Okay. I got a cussin' problem here guys.

I got a new tv last year. The trouble is I didn't know this, but it didn't have the old fashioned audio/audio video ports (Red, White, Yellow) but composite. I need to use the old fashioned (I think they're called RCA cables) cable to get the VCR part to work correctly. With sound. If I hook it up with HDMI, the VCR will not play sound. (Yes it has HDMI, but as the title says, for multicord, it only has component. [insert cussword here])

Is there some adapter I could get to get the #@$#@$%$ thing to work? I admit minor fail; I didn't know until I got a fat PS2 and couldn't get it to work at all with the normal hookup cable i bought...

Does your TV do Optical input and VCR do optical output? (google it, lazy to grab an image). Models of TV and VCR you're working with so I have a way to visualize what ports you have available.

Pretty much. From what I can tell you:

TV is a JVC. Has two hdmi ports, a usb port, and a cable hookup (I'm getting a RFC switch to handle the PS2, sadly). Also has component, but doesn't handle RCA.

VCR/DVD combo is a toshiba, don't know what model, but as I said, it HAS to use the RCA or no sound on the VCR. (Which is a problem since I MOSTLY use it for a vcr, you should see our videotape collection we inherited from my dad!) Has component, but that's pretty much only for the DVD (PROBLEM!) and has s-video out as well. Also has a (VERY useless considering) a hdmi port, but that doesn't work for the VCR. I know, I tried it when I had a tv with RCA inputs. (I can get you a photo of the back in a bit if you want.)

I'm seriously considering saying "screw that" and getting a RCA to HDMI adapter once I get some money if there are some good ones ><. I'd have to put it though my HDMI switcher but that'd be better than cussin' up a storm.

Honestly might be worth getting a vhs to DVD converter and use your ps2 to watch them. Vhs tapes die easily, so might as well back them up.

Grey, Zent; Ha. I'm not that big a cusser anyway but this is making me want to say some pretty bad language as it is. (And yes, the fail is I didn't know right away. Haven't had the itch to play a tape in a good while; I only found out when I got the PS2)

Ksandra: Might be. Tho these are commercial tapes(like Disney movies); My dad was a rabid movie collector when the VCR became a success and affordable. Before things went a little south (and we could afford it; haven't been able to afford to rep since Mom died) we were slowly replacing them with DVDs where available. Right now we don't have the money. I might try copying the ones that you can't get a DVD for tho. (Some of them are quite rare.) Also b/c these were commercial, they may be hard to copy.

But yeah, if you don't know what RCA cords are; they're also known as old fashioned A/V cables. I just need to find some kinda adapter so I can actually use the VCR. Either A/V to HDMI or something else..

Could also look at simply not worrying about audio on the TV, and instead hook the audio to a different amp/speakers. In that train of thought, it's not uncommon for decent HDMI AV receivers to internally scale any inputs to HDMI for monitor out. So you could possibly upgrade your setup further, and add that capability when you do.

You can get a stand alone scaler for maybe $30-50 (though the better consumer ones, like xRGB, run in the hundreds...but that's more for gaming, to add scanlines/etc).

Does the TV not have any RCA inputs for audio in? By that, I mean the red/white inputs.

Mabu; The TV doesn't have any RCA inputs AT ALL. Only component and HDMI, which is..worse than annoying.

Ksandra: I've been thinking about doing that for the rarer tapes that you can't buy in DVD/Blue Ray. As I said, we want to rep them, but right now don't have the money to. DVDs last longer than tapes, that's fo'sure.

There are downloadable collections of every single Disney movie (and short film) on many different peer to peer sites. Maybe consider getting a portable HDD and just getting all the movies on there? You could watch everything and not have to worry about converting your whole collection. You can also Chromecast using VLC or use your PC as a media source for the TV. There are lots of options.

That's weird that your tv doesn't have red/white audio input. I've got a few hd tvs that have 5-input component, 2 are audio, 3 video (it's 3 different color types; no audio), where one of the video can accept the "yellow" rca input. Does your vcr not have a normal rf/old coax cable output as well?

Also, what are the model numbers for your tv and vcr? Might help us find options.

Ornitha; The TV has a rf/cable input (Antenna, of course!), I'm planning on using that for the PS2 until I can find a better option. (Ironically, THAT is how I discovered the problem. Got a PS2 fat, got the cords, UGH I can't hook this up and my VCR doesn't work! WTF?)

I'll get you the model numbers soon as I can look at the backs n' stuff. If there are options I'd appreciate it. Maybe some pics would help too.

[edit] Hokay. Model number on the VCR/DVD combo is (Toshiba) D-KVR20. Had to change the battery on my digital camera, I'll have a pic of the back in a moment.
[edit again] Okay, model number on the TV is (JVC) EM32FL. Can turn it around and get a pic of that as well now that I got the camera fixed.
[Last edit] Forgot to mention. I'm also using the TV as a computer monitor (I have a VERY small room, so did that for space reasons) so one of the HDMI ports is taken up by the computer; i'm using a adapter cord for that since my vid card didn't have a full size HDMI port. The other HDMI port is taken up by the switcher. Still have 2 ports left on that so I got room.

If your tv is exactly as you listed, then it should have the needed inputs. http://www.manualslib.com/manual/704...page=14#manual , assuming this is the right manual anyway, it has 5 rca-styled inputs in the back, 3 for video, 2 for audio. One of those video is shared with regular composite/yellow, http://www.manualslib.com/manual/704...page=17#manual . Maybe you still have the physical manuals around somewhere to verify this? Or just give it a shot! (it's funny that this model was one I was considering some months back, still had it in my browser history heh) The cables don't matter, if it is rca-type cable, it will work for composite or component. The colors just help you know which output was connected to which input.

If this fails though, you could try to daisy-chain your ps2 onto the composite inputs of the vcr, and the vcr is then hooked into the RF/coax on the tv. Kinda sucks if the ps2 is used a lot since you have to turn on two things to get a picture, but it'll work.

Here was something I found about your vcr: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=D-KVR20-R . That hdmi connection really only supports the dvd playback function of it, which is a damn shame. Well featured otherwise though. Here was a manual: https://www.manualowl.com/m/Toshiba/.../Manual/350731 , sites uses flash to present it though.

I tried that with the hookup. TV went "This is unsupported~" and wouldn't show me anything. Boo. (You'd better belive I was cussing!) And yeah, that is kinda ironic!

Checked the back again on the VCR, no cable hookup, boo. So guess I need a adapter. Either to HDMI or to coax. Either one would work. I do have that RFU switch coming for the PS2, but if there's another way...

And yeah. Pure HDMI only works with the DVD playback on this thing. Any ideas?

Your TV instructions says RCA can work. Yellow goes to Y/V port (left port) and White and Red to audio.

My only guess is that the tv isn't set to the right input for viewing. That manual shows "Video" and "Component," in which case you would choose Video, but I'm sure you've already tried that... And derp on the no-RF out on the vcr when I linked the manual and didn't notice lol. Try swapping around the cables, assuming you have at least 3 rca cables, maybe the cables aren't good (while still maintaining the correct connection, red out to red in and such but swapping cable colors around if they were colored). Regardless, you should at least get sound when switching to Video on the tv, since the vcr will be outputting sound.

Could also try this with the ps2 on and connecting it through the rca cables. You know exactly how the ps2 should be acting/sounding when in a game/dvd (and can at least test with the RF). The TV should output whatever sound is coming through the red/white inputs when on Video or Component, though that's still just an assumption.
