I just love when "babby's first internet forum" comes to visit BG. The forums have changed many times over the years, from alla, to KI, to XIAH, and now I guess reddit. It's endearing to know that as we all get older, teenagers are still just as embarrassingly cringe-inducing as ever.

It's a matter of what your goals are.

Calling someone a fuckstick is dandy if you're just shooting the shit, or blowing of steam, or generally doing things outside of the context of creating an informed debate that is intended to change people's opinions on something. Doing it in that context does not instantly invalidate your other points, but does weaken the overall argument. As such, you should avoid them when operating under this mindset.

What you seem to be lacking is the understanding that people value things differently.

Yes, if the entirety of your argument is on one fallacy, your entire argument is invalid. Yes, the points that are valid by themselves are still valid. When you mix these valid and invalid points together, you're weakening your overall argument, making your statements less likely to be valued overall.

"The Bible states that homosexuality is a sin" is a fact. A person holding a sign obviously values this fact very, very highly to the point it informs their beliefs and opinions on things. Most people probably don't value it much. When signholder uses ad hominem arguments, people's value of that fact is likely to go down.

Just because it's "less likely to be valued" doesn't change what it is. It only changes how you react to it. If you get offended and miss the point or ignore it, cool. But again, you could've learned something.

The bible also states that god created the world and Adam and Eve are a thing and lots of other shit. I mean I don't wanna go into it but considering these things as valid because you believe in them doesn't make them valid. Yeah, you can believe in it but your argument from the get-go is wrong so who cares? It only really matters if there's some truth to it.

If you don't troll around in expert roulettes by planting hate on your healers and causing wipes, I feel bad for you. These things (tome grinding, daily hunts, etc.) are so mundane and boring at this point that when I play with friends, it's a lot more fun trying new things and fucking around while doing the same 2 dungeons every day, over, and over, and over haha. In a random roulette, it would be a different story.

Skimming through this thread I'm thinking I'm the only person that browse reddit with score filtering and score sorting disabled. I did this because I think the weakness of a score based community almost always turn into a circle jerk community and I like to get my news (not only talking about r/ffxiv here) from multiple sources.

The purpose was to use an example of extremism because it's a pretty blatantly obvious case of ad hominem weakening someone's credibility.

And I've outright said that the points are still valid, it's just obfuscating someone's ability to find them. If your goal is to cook a meal a good meal for someone, you don't cover it in shit and tell them "There's some good food in there, it's your own problem if you can't deal with all the other stuff and see that." Because it's a problem that the creator induced. Can you really blame someone for not wanting to take the time to sift through it when the creator could've just not put all the extraneous shit in to begin with?
