Gotta say I'm really surprised by how many people are so focused on this show. When I originally saw the post on Reddit I ignored it because their voices sounded annoying and why do I care about some fanmail a twitch channel got anyway?

Now everyone is so focused on how much better the JP community is because of some call they got and it's surprising. Wasn't this kdumbf guy all over Reddit telling people to get raped and shit? He's a part of this show and they're lecutring about the community?

Apparently, he sees no inconsistency whatsoever between desiring a community that fosters cooperation and improvement and desiring a community that applauds telling cancer victims to choke to death on their own chemo-induced vomit.

I got more of the vibe of "YEAH ENDGAME PLAYERS WHY AREN'T YOU TEACHING US" rather than a "We need to be more active in promoting learning groups and self improvement" from that thread. I suppose the two sentiments are similar but it feels people want to continue to be leeches and keep shifting the blame rather than own up that there's a lot more they could do to improve rather than make only "NO TOME BONUS" groups.

First off, lol @ the armchair MMO-er shit. Are we really not past that yet? Kaiyoko is right, and it's just like Sath said about football. Same kind of kids I used to go to Street Fighter tournaments with who would watch the pros just barely lose a match and go, "Jesus Christ why didn't he just block the overhead what a fuckin' scrub" without ever being there themselves. If you don't know shit, you can't talk about shit. Simple as that. Watching streams and videos of encounters does not provide you with an accurate example of the content. Those are the same kinds of people who watch a3s clear videos and go "Oh man looks 2ez gg ez game ez lyfe" and now they're waiting desperately for 3.1 to launch so they can finally clear it.

Re: JP community vs. NA community - I remember Arthars talking on his stream about a "week long pug" he had for the week for A4S once. I think the big difference here is that people in the JP community are probably more willing to look at pug groups as an investment. (e.g. I must teach the others here if we are to win). I think in the NA/EU community we have a lot less patience. If people don't know their shit or don't have a good grasp then people just don't want to spend all the time it might take the teach them. I definitely think this mentality is the same reason why the NA community is so big on statics or bust. Most people won't even try it unless they have a static.

I probably would not raid if I had not attempted to make my own static or had my own static for some of these reasons, but also because of the fact that I like being part of a group or some kind of community. It's comforting to me and I like the relationships. However, if you don't have a lot of time and can only raid when you can PUG, then I get that. I think overall the prospect of the time investment of pugging/teaching strangers is just too daunting for most in our community and not much weight is placed on the view that it's an overall good for the community since we're a more individual society. Not saying it's wrong, that's just western culture in many ways - more about the individual.

nah. i've only been skimming the novels but no one's taking his ethuggery seriously so i don't think there's anything we need to act on as mods. unless he threw a few no-no words in there that i missed, but a ctrl+F would tell us that if we feel the need. and for entertainment, its too long.

BG during the ffxi days was intense, because the game was hard and/or took a lot of time to get good at.

Just chiming in to say, No. No it was not hard. No it didn't take very much time to get good at. It took a long, LONG fucking time to get TO 75, and an even longer time to get a reasonable amount of gear for most jobs. If you didn't have a solid understanding of your job's capabilities by that point, it was because you were a mouthbreathing fuck.

The amount of individual player skill necessary for XIV endgame is at least 20 times what it was for XI, and XIV isn't particularly difficult. XI's "difficulty" was in penalizing failure: wipe on Kirin, now you have to farm another pop, which is several hours of work. Wipe on Tiamat, another group takes is, now you have to wait another 3 days to even think about having another attempt. In XI, you had one shot at something, and if you fucked up that was it, you had to deal with whatever it took to try again. The skill barrier was significantly lower, practically trivial, because of it, the hardest thing was getting 18 people to all do their trivial task at once. Just like the hardest part of XIV is getting 8 people to do their slightly less trivial tasks at once.
