It's a me:
Can't say I diagree at all. I mean, I don't work in the same type of software environment, but I have no idea how they are taking 24 hours to do a major patch.
I work in defense contractor software. I think our cycle would give Ragns an aneurysm.
Thought this was the most appropriate thread to post this:

I feel like Ragns email was not meant to be taken seriously lol
3.1 small update? oh gotcha. didn't know a content patch that didn't have raid content (24 man aside) were just small updates
but 24 hours oh no that's such a long time to not be playing a game chock full and stuffed full of content. what will we ever do
It'll all be worth it when no one gives a fuck about LoV after the usual 2-4 week period.
Hope you guys like LoV, they've stated every other patch we're getting shit content for the gold saucer. Just because you give a lot of content doesn't mean it isn't terrible.
They're already recycling a bunch of mechanics that are already in place, it's not like they're releasing a brand new game.
Maybe they're releasing the content on brand new servers, but that still doesn't justify hours long maintenance.
Assets are usually uploaded days before an update happen.
A staging environment is usually up days before an update is actually released so the testers can actually do their job so it's not like if they actually have to push a lot of new content.
Maybe they have to change the structure of some huge ass Oracle database but that would take an hour... maybe 4 hours if their DBA is a complete retard.
The client files are uploaded on CDNs around the world which takes a few minutes.
Nothing justify an update taking 24 hours especially when every goddamn video game studio can push updates within seconds and you usually add an extra 15 mins in case shit goes wrong.
We're in an era of zero downtime and any downtime can cost you your job. You guys even bitched so hard when me and Sonomaa accidentally fucked up BG's database for 3 hours and we aren't even paid to do this shit.
Is there a network update been done as well at the same time?
Regardless that is shocking by your manager "Look Ragns.. Waifu_lover_xxx says you are an asshat because the servers are down for the ten minutes"
I worked in telcos and I remember we had an outage on a cell. There was some extreme weather going on that day and really high winds. Warnings on radio and news sites about weather. Company put out a statement basically apologising but they couldn't repair immediately due to weather conditions. Basically if any engineer went up there was a good chance he was getting blown off. The vitriol posted on Facebook was unreal. "Please send engineer to death so I can SMS my bff"
In regards to you and Sono fucking up a database, that I don't really care about. Not my business. That is what it is.. and just in case you couldn't read the sarcasm literally dripping from my post about 'content' FFXIV has.. it was sarcasm. I've been bored with the game since about three weeks post HW, and doing Savage Alexander further killed my drive to give a fuck so.. there's that.
As for it taking them forever vs most companies getting a patch out quickly, a lot of games who have big content patches or expansions have generally been shitty launches with plenty of downtime too. That's one thing 14's gotten waaay better at since ARR launched and through other further patches; they've launched and aside from some 90ks and problems getting in for like 15-20 mins, shit seems to work.
I'm not defending the 24-hour maint thing, I guess i'm just to the point where I don't care anymore. If I had to guess, though, maybe it's like you said earlier.. maybe it has to do with the new servers the shit's getting moved to as well, but who knows. If this patch doesn't fix the lag I've had for like three weeks now, though.. I probably won't even play as it is, so yay.
