The XIV subreddit is garbage and, lull period or not, the amount of "Look at my funny picture! Kek!" and "My friend just died. Please pity me!" posts is absolutely disgusting.

I think a lot of what gets upvoted/downvoted on reddit has a lot to do with "Does a receptive audience find your topic first?". Some things will get upvoted because people find them aesthetically pleasing (e.g. Fanart) or humorous (Denmo's videos come to mind), but a lot of the discussion topics seem to boil down to this. For instance, say you post a topic wanting to discuss Alexander Savage in some way. Perhaps the people who find your topic first dislike raiding or have had bad experiences with it. They will most likely downvote your topic, which will cause it to not be as visible at first. (I think that's how reddit works, please correct me if I am wrong). Considering a majority of this game does not raid and most likely only has one class (if that) at max level, it's not surprising that the more raid oriented/HC themed stuff often gets tossed aside. The majority of the game cares about the non-raiding aspects of the game, so those things are obviously going to resonate with people.

It's not a problem with /r/FFXIV in my opinion, it's just the fact that this game is catered to encourage casual players and they make up the majority of the fan base.

Dude, what? The keyword in your post and my response was "having a spine," the very definition of which means not being a coward. When someone gives you criticism, you can either accept the criticism and try to defend your point (having a spine), or sweep it under the rug and refuse to respond to the person giving valid points (being a coward). I can't believe I have to spell this out to you.

These are my personal favorites, where my unpopular opinion gets people riled up. Not only are these pity posts not relevant whatsoever (this guy died, as do hundreds of thousands of people daily, but because he played FFXIV it means it's suddenly completely on-topic), but because they contain the topic of life, it means that disagreeing with the OP is practically considered sacrilege. This is on par with that couple that got married the other week, and because they met through FFXIV, it was suddenly FFXIV-related, and then to top it all off, they then proceeded to make their direct link be that of a picture of a The Last of Us PS4 they'd gotten as a wedding gift. That's some good, quality FFXIV shit right there.

Jesus, its not like the mods are somehow forcing fanart to the top and banning the stuff you want to see. The people who go to the sub upvote what they like. If thats not in line with what you like, then I guess that sucks that you have to keep scrolling. But taking away the stuff other people like is not the answer.

When you try to reason with people while being rude or insulting, or even if you do it when just talking to them, it doesn't matter if the criticism is valid. You've invalidated your entire argument by ditching the merits for shock value.
