NYC pharmacy institutes 7% man tax to help raise awareness of the "Pink Tax" that women have to live with.
A few other stores in NY have done this before with less fanfare. A shop I worked at a long time ago would do something similar for a week every now and then.

The chick who runs it just pays the sales tax for female customers. It's a publicity stunt that works in her case. She'll definitely drum up more business.

What's important to note is that her point is correct. Women's products are statistically more expensive than men's stuff across the board for similar products.

But the important counterpoint is similar is not the same as equivalent. A lot of men's products are a bit more barebones or less selection etc because in general we give less shits.

I believe the crux of the issue is that feminine hygiene products are considered "luxury" items for tax purposes rather than toiletries.

Canada eliminated sales tax on tampons and pads last year.

At least in NY. They repealed any sales tax on women's health items.

This article is highlighting the marketed price differences.

all hygiene products are by definition toiletries though toiletries also include cosmetics. Which may or may not be taxed depending on where you are but applies to both genders. Some of the argument that gets pushed is they want some feminine hygiene products especially ones with no male equivalent to be considered health products which I think aren't taxed in most places

If women are dumb enough to buy more expensive shit just because it's pink then that's on them. My sister has been using old spice deodorant for years because it works just as good so why the fuck not.

Ah, didn't notice the mention in the article that it was successfully repealed.

Seems pretty reasonable to me, it's an expense only women have to deal with, tampons may not strictly be a health item like bandages are but hell, bleeding is bleeding, it's probably not a hair worth splitting.

If I was a menstruating woman and someone told me I didn't really "need" tampons to go about my day I'd probably be pretty annoyed too.

As for the price difference for items with a male and female equivalent, that's kind of whatever, it's probably just a marketing perception thing.

ie: "This is a specialty product designed specifically for women, therefore it's harder to produce" when in actuality it's the same shit with a different scent and a pink package.

There's no issue to address there other than getting people to stop buying into that bullshit and just use regular stuff, there's nothing stopping women from using men's deodorant or razors other than advertisers saying so.

I guess though like in most issues you could make the hair splitting argument both ways. Which has always amused me to no end. Stop making a big deal out of it... no u no u!!! no u!!!!

You'd be surprised how many hairs are split though on tax categories and regulation and such. Like the other day I bought a "supplement" which was basically ground up coconut and chia seed and such. Even though it's clearly just normal food people eat ground up and put together because it's more for health it doesn't get counted as food so I still got taxed.

Tell that to the freebleeders!!! Who also happen to be the same segment that cares most about this lol. I say we should take more things off and use the Mr. Chows but did you die reasoning if it's needed

That womens deodorant that costs more probably costs more for a reason, and its not the patriarchy.

Top one is womens, bottom is for men. I'm not sure which deodorent this is, but the site I took it from says its "the same manufacturer and same product line".

Common ingredients found in same order:
Aqua, Aluminium Chlorohydrate Steareth-2, Steareth-21, Parfum, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Aluminium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Tetrasodium EDTA

    Womens:
Benzyl Salicylate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Linalool, Geraniol, Benzyl Alcohol

    Mens:
Limonene, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Coumann, Benzyl Alcohol, Linalool, Citral, Geranilol

Knowing that the order of the ingredient list matters, we can see that the ingredients in the womens and mens deodorent is actually different. Do I know what the cost difference of these materials are? Nope, but I can see a visual representation of why the cost should be different. Its entirely possible that the material cost of the extra womens ingredients could very well be cheaper than the material cost of the extra mens ingredients.

    Razors/Shaving cream
I personally used a womens shaving cream once (I ran out of mine back when I used to actually shave) and I regretted it right away because I smelled like fucking flowers. All mens shaving cream I've ever used has no actual fragrance (or maybe I just didnt notice because I didnt come out of the bathroom smelling like a bouquet of flowers). Do you think fragrance is free?!?

This guy thinks the ingredients in mass produced hygiene products are the cost drivers.

    Lol
