Was a pretty good discussion if a bit unfocused, certainly a very varied panel of viewpoints.

The professor has some good points about the use and natural evolution of language even if he gets a bit exaggerated and conspiratorial with his arguments, his concerns about free speech aren't without their merits as well but he's very black and white on the issue.

The comparison of genderless pronouns to the use of things like "Mrs" and "Ms" in the past is pretty apt if on a much different scale, but it's a good example of how little things can be blown way out of proportion when people are staunchly resistant to social change that they don't agree with or aren't comfortable with.

The 31 flavors of pronouns is certainly no realistic solution and the prospect of expecting people to know and use unique pronouns for specific people is a bit absurd but it's important not to use that as an excuse to dismiss the issue outright. It's easy to trivialize someone's feelings about being labeled as something that they don't identify as since such a thing is never an issue for the majority of people.

However labeling people as hateful and prejudiced simply because their use of language does not align with your own is not going to help progress your cause. It simply isn't fair to assume someone's use of conventional, inoffensive language has some kind of subversive and harmful motive when your preferred alternative is a completely alien and abstract vocabulary.

This isn't to say conventional, inoffensive language can't be used in such a way, just that it's not fair to assume it is given the circumstance.

This is pretty much my main issue, I mean, it's 31 flavours of pronouns right now, but people can add more without end correct? And what happens if I use the wrong pronoun accidentally because I interact with 20+ people who all use different pronouns and they get offended enough to turn it into a shitstorm? I'd be all for an all inclusive pronoun that all encompasses non gender binary peoples, but having this many is just a bit too much honestly.
