Isn't which one of those two things came first important? That is, if it's a part of asian culture to not complain about their situation and ask for handouts/equality or "act like brown people" then it would, rightfully so, create a narrative for asians that would help them succeed because they actually do those things. So people would say that their vaunted place in society is due to those facts, and rightfully so?

First, I'm not sure you can say that acquiescence to hardship is any more innate to immigrants from Asian cultures (note of course that "Asian" culture as a monolith is simplistic at best) than it is to Mexican immigrants. The latter group comes here, knowing they won't have any rights, to scrap and save doing jobs no one else does in terrible (and many times illegal) conditions. It's usually there legal children that grow up here exposed to non-immigrant peers that go "Hey that's fucked up and wrong, don't treat us that way."

Second, it doesn't matter if the cart comes before the horse or not because the idea that "staying in line" helped Asians succeed where other races didn't is still discriminatory. Let's say the idea comes after Asian advancement, it's a shallow excuse to ignore real problems of justice (unless you are going to assert discrimination is illusory, despite all the historical wage gap data) by saying "Hey these guys were able to bootstrap themselves out, you should just work harder."

Is that crazy of me to think? Or is the argument (which is what I'm understand from greatguardian) that it IS that way because we had a large influx of majority (large majority) highly educated asian immigrants? So, the US got the best of the best and everyone as a result thinks asians are hardworking/smart when in reality there aren't any advantages of asian culture over american/etc.

Correct in your summation, I don't know enough personally of greatguardian's data claims to argue it's true but it sounds right.

But what about the national test scores of those asian countries vs US in math/science? Could say that's more a result of school systems, and ok, but then what about majority asian public schools outperforming the majority white schools here in our own country? Teachers in all of these places are fudging the ways in which they test/teach because of the asian myth? Coincidentally (or not really, I guess), this Hilgar guy (the one whose research paper the Wpost article is based on) has written about stuff like that before

There are plenty of non-Asian countries with superior math/science education scores than the U.S. (mostly due to the fact they have a better education systems as a whole). Half of the countries in the Top 10 of Math/Science educational achievement are "white," albeit the other half are Eastern Asian and the East outstrips the West. And remember there are plenty of correlative factors other than "Asians make their kids do math/science" that explain advancement in those fields. For example, a number of the Asian countries that have high Math/Science scores have comparatively large tech and science industries as part of their economies.

I don't disagree that a culture that prizes education and focuses on it leads to better educational outcomes and advancements, but to say that's a cultural quality unique to Asian countries isn't true. And to argue that other minorities "should be like Asians" ignores very important cultural reasons why some demographics are in the situation they are in now with the simplistic idea that they should be able to imitate what others did.

You could put it that way, but if it were the case that Asian culture is truly the reason for their success wouldn't this regression towards the American norm mean that Asians are losing the very thing that makes them competitive comparative to other minorities? That in turn means we would be seeing them regress socioeconomically as a demographic to be more like other minorities.

So the fact that they are not in fact doing this would at least suggest that the dirty concept of "privilege" might have some basis here. Even if it was the case that previous generations of Asians put in the work that got future generations a better situation, it still shows that at some point in time a minority needs to "pay its dues" to "earn" equality... instead of, you know, being treated equal.
