You would actually like the bulk of the video. It's like you guys are picking apart a child's rendering of the rape of Persephone done in crayon.

Reading through Thunder's description of the video, I started out hopeful. It's not often people get very far discussing the left's abusive relationship with science. Then he started saying things like "racism" and "evolutionary biology" and my heart sank. How anyone can find themselves personally invested in the ontological gerrymandering that is social science is beyond me. Hard science problems.

Oddly enough he uses the same exact phrase as you later in the video lol. The first 2 hours of the video is worth a viewing, if not solely for the fact that the majority of the people on this website need a reminder as to why marxism is utter shit.

It is not odd. It is an excellent phrase that I was unreasonably proud of and I kinda hate him now for stealing it from me.

I may give it a watch when I get home but it's unlikely it'll do anything but reaffirm my current worldview. A dearth of scientific and academic literacy causes otherwise intelligent people to get behind stupid things for stupid reasons. More breaking news at 11.

I was going to reply to the first part and say this video might hit too close to home for some people, but then I read the 2nd part as I was replying, guess it wasn't needed just posting to verify that I indeed watched it I guess. Already watched a handful of his videos so most of it wasn't new for me but it's always fun to listen to him speak.

why do so many things have to be put on 100 around here. I can't be the only one to expect someone to convey a little more information in posts, be it just the video ones, link to some diagram, witty quips, etc, and it wasn't impossible for panda to do. Sick, alright, this is about marxism, I know what I'm getting into. Rather than essentially asking people for several minutes of their time to figure out what it could be about by either researching the guy or just watching for the first several minutes.

I even went on to say I really enjoyed the video and gave an honest account of what I remembered having watching ~a third of it a couple hours prior to the post. I appreciated his post - like 95% of my post might as well have been thanking him for sharing that video with me because I didn't catch it even though I follow JRE

For the record, I was mainly just prickly that you were summarizing the video by saying it trashed an irresponsible scienctific community then used examples coming from evolutionary biology and toilet paper tier social science projects. Like Sath, my degrees are in physics so I'm a science snob.

The scientific community is already acutely aware of garbage science. Reminding the layperson that it exists is often a double edged sword because anyone who could tell the difference between good science and bad wouldn't need a reminder.

I can understand the issue with evolutionary biology as a hard science vs physics if that's where you are with determining whether or not the video's for you, and that's cool, in all liklihood you can skip the video and the discussion because there is nothing extraordinarily rigorous that the peterson guy is putting forward (tbh, I don't think it'll be possible to find these social science topics having a relatively similar amount of precision/accuracy as physics so idk what you were expecting lol).

But evolutionary biology is all I used. I think you're somehow inferring the "show 50 pictures ... and it'll prove racism" thing as an example of "toilet paper tier social science" that I was celebrating as refuting irresponsible science?

I think that's it, because I was confused you had issue with me using "racism" and "evolutionary biology" as if both were my own thoughts. Evolutionary biology was the bit that was supposed to at least leave the door open for the forgone conclusion of racism in the poorly analyzed data from the "science paper" he was citing

Here's what I'm assuming is the relevant part, edited for emphasis with bold/underlines, as far as I'm understanding so you don't have to go back and forth,

the example that I've got in mind after waking up having watched an hour is the one that's like, "show a white man 50 pictures of black people and white people and have him say one good thing and one bad thing about them - observe that it's easier (time-wise) for him to say good things about whites and bad things about blacks, which means racism". And the guy, jordan peterson, says that it could just be a novelty factor in that of course it's easier to ascribe good things with someone who looks like us and bad things to someone who doesn't. He doesn't say this, but that "phenomenon" is very well understood in evolutionary biology. There is a great purpose to naturally be averse towards things that aren't like you, and extra keen towards things that are like you.

The stuff in quotes was the science he analyzed. He said that their test had not tested for a number of things and gave the example of what he called "novelty factor" being able to explain their data without supporting the conclusion that they had and that they never tested for it ie, a single experiment of data to try and explain complex mechanisms with obviously many variables is dishonest science. I added my own bit about evolutionary biology since I understood his thing about 'novelty factor' to be exactly that. I understand your issue with evolutionary biology (idk what else to call it, I know there are some weird stuff under that umbrella) but some of it's got to be good? I mean, dawkin's most prized work that's stood basically unedited for the last 40 odd years is evolutionary biology, albeit at the gene level and he explicitly says he's not attempting to stretch the ideas out to complex life. When absolute accuracy is impossible we have to settle for close approximation?
