Why are you in class?
You're given two choices:
Join ISIS
or
Realize those "protesters" are the future of the world
Were there actually any black people in that group? I think I spotted an Asian.
Was having this discussion last night. Those protesters are the future of the world in the same way that the 60s hippies were the future of the world.
Sure, some of them stuck it out. Many grew up and moved on. The ones that stuck it out drifted into obscurity, life moved on.
This is what I WANT to believe will happen to a lot of this crap, but that may be optimistic.
the bulk of the protesters seem to be newly arrived college kids, that is easily influenced teenagers. and as with all embarrassing teenage acts i imagine they're gonna look back at this stuff and feel dumber than hell in the years to come
Ah yes, young malleable minds that are easily convinced that joining a cult is totally cool. I don't remember anyone on my campus being nearly this crazy back when I was in school.
They don't even know what a modem sounds like. It's just sad.
I hope it is boredom and potential novelty excitement more than anything, I remember back in high school the principal wanted to ban Raiders paraphernalia because a mexican kid got shot in a drive-by near our bus loop and the truck was wearing a Raiders decal. Raiders clothing was huge back then with the mexican kids so they started walking around and chanting and 2 of my friends asked me to come along so they could have a white kid. I did it because it was funner than w/e class I was in when they walked by. This was back in like 2004 though.
While nearly everyone is in agreement that the vast majority of these students need some thicker skin and need to get used to living a world where there's no trollsafe doors and bullyproof windows, it's undeniable that racism and sexism exist. The problem that these students are fighting an unnecessary war against discrimination, it's that they've chosen some of the stupidest things to tackle and they have an extremely distorted vision of what victory would look like.
Plenty of respected academics in minority studies fields have done a lot to further actual civil rights fights. God can only hope that old guard is teaching some adequate replacements. But from what I hear from some of my grad student friends, it's definitely not the case.
