Except it is. The One Ring was written in the language of Mordor, but used Elvish script.

    Lies!

Thats a linguistic technicality. Mordor doesnt have its own alphabet but the language is black tongue. Its like saying spanish is written in latin and not spanish.

Hey buckethead, don't believe Gondor's lies!

But even I know the One Ring was inscribed in Elvish script the Black Speech. Colbert-tier nerdage would be knowing exactly why it was a simple gold ring and the reasoning of why it shifts the wielder into the Calaquendi realm.

It only shifts some (to my knowledge, no Elf ever wore it, so we don't know its effect on them, but Sauron doesn't shift, and presumably, other Aunar/Maiar don't shift, either. Which gives credence to the idea that Bombadil is one of the them...).

Presumably, though, any mortal would enter the Calaquendi realm, simply because so much of Sauron's own spirit was invested in the ring and he is, by nature, a spiritual being. Also, to the best of my recollection, while the ring appears golden, we don't actually have confirmation from Tolkien himself that it was made of gold.

Well there's a reason why it's been called Isildur's Bane so it has indeed been wore by an elf. And the reason it was made of gold was because gold held the most taint from Morgoth's Ring and was the only substance capable of being imbued with Sauron's power. Since Sauron is Maiar it's quite possible he's naturally able to shift realms and the ring is just a reflection of his powers invested into the ring.

Best I can speculate on Tom is he's an unmentioned number of the Valar entering right after Morgoth that promptly went native. Tolkien was purposely vague on his origins, just that he's older than dirt with several non-answer explanations.

But yeah, Colbert has been confirmed by Michael Tolkien as knowing just as much, if not more, than JRR. It's nerdy autism of the highest degree but I love him for it.

Isildur was human, not Elf (though he had elven blood deep in his veins).

There is an essay I read many moons ago that made a fantastic claim that Bombadil is Aule, and while I couldn't say it is definitive, it's definitely intriguing and I don't think can be dismissed out of hand. (Found it)

Also, I should note: I consider everything published after The Silmarillion to be Middle Earth Apocrypha, and while I appreciate Christopher's contributions, my personal obsession is with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion. I love JRR's writing style, and Christopher never matched that. But yes, now that you mention it, I found that reference in Morgoth's Ring, though I am distrustful of it: its implication of the innate evil or taint of gold is somewhat belied by the fact that Narya (Gandalf's ring) was also gold, as was Vilya, and while there is definitely always a caveat that "Sauron never touched them", both were also always described as pure and free of evil (as was Nenya, though it was mithril). There are other points where gold is referenced as pure (though silver much more frequently). I do not doubt that, in some form of his many iterations, gold was uniformly tainted by Morgoth, and so Sauron found it easier to fulfill his purpose (namely, to taint and dominate), but it does not ring true with works published by JRR, nor with Christopher's first (and, in my mind, most authentic) presentation of JRR's expanded history. I should note that other materials likely could have held Sauron's power-- it was more the purpose to which he meant to bend his power that Morgoth's Ring cites as its incentive to Sauron.

Bombadil = Aule? You know, I could actually get behind that. Will grudging concede on Isildur since there was a larger bloodline gap than what I remembered tracing back to Elros.

JRR is still the superior source, his unpublished works later released with his kid's added scribblings being less than ideal but do help fill in a number of gaps. I suppose there could be some kind of plotkai where it was gold mined from "special' sites, or special smelting that magnified the taint, or he simply faced HQ when crafting. Everything post-Silmarillion is indeed rather floofy but the Tolkien name brand carries more authority than whatever you or I could muster.

LotR is still one of my finer collection pieces. 1957 7th impression and all three are very lightly used. Absolutely terrifying what 1954-55 first editions/impressions sell for.

So I'm late to the party but is it really privilege if Beyonce really didn't have the best album?

Maybe, just maybe, her music just isn't that good?
