    Old Tom Bombadil. Possibly the least liked character in The Lord of the Rings. A childish figure so disliked by fans of the book that few object to his absence from all adaptations of the story. And yet, there is another way of looking at Bombadil, based only on what appears in the book itself, that paints a very different picture of this figure of fun.
    Wrong and I stopped reading after this.

    i'm getting flashbacks, the worst arguments i had in college were with my LotR obsessed roommate over Bombadil and whether or not he would have survived had Sauron won the war EVEN THOUGH TOLKIEN EXPLICITLY STATES TOM WOULD HAVE FALLEN TO SAURON'S POWER EVENTUALLY

    that was a good essay though Maroot. i had always taken Tolkien at face value that Tom's identity was intentionally ambiguous and his existence was entirely to serve a thematic purpose as personification of an ideal. interesting to see him and Goldberry mapped directly to Valar.

    well... I mean, I don't dislike tom but he's kind of a red herring as far as the rest of the story goes. particularly in the movies, where time is precious and plotlines fall before the scythe, I was perfectly happy with him being cut. I mean, it's kinda symbolic of his role in the world, anyway. he's fantastically powerful, mysterious, and ultimately irrelevant.

    I love Tom Bombadil. I tried to sing to you in Discord but you're afk.

    I think he sets the tone of the grand stage on which the books are set. There are HUGE mythical figures in Middle Earth. Tom is unaffected by the most important object in the (current) world of the Hobbits and Gandalf. It helps to blow the story out beyond the Shire very quickly and prepares the reader for the unforgiving nature of the rest of the world.

    In my opinion at least.

    even were he more powerful than a fully reconstituted Sauron, which he was not, i'm not sure it was in Tom's nature even to defend himself. he operates as the living antithesis to the notions of violence and domination, notions that to some extent consume every member of the fellowship and their allies, a manifestation of pacifism that rejects the war in its entirety. the grace of nature standing in contrast to the industrialized horrors of Tolkien's age that saw so much of the world seek mastery over the rest.

    Lord of the Rings books are trash, Hobbit is top tier though.

    Also Tom was a character that Tolkien created in the poem "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" after a doll owned by one of his kids and put into the books as a nod to those and also;

    "We need not go into the sublimities of 'I am that am' - which is quite different from he is. She adds as a concession a statement of pan of the 'what'. He is master in a peculiar way: he has no fear, and no desire of possession or domination at all. He merely knows and understands about such things as concern him in his natural little realm. He hardly even judges, and as far as can be seen makes no effort to reform or remove even the Willow. I don't think Tom needs philosophizing about, and is not improved by it. But many have found him an odd or indeed discordant ingredient. In historical fact I put him in because I had already 'invented' him independently (he first appeared in the Oxford Magazine) and wanted an 'adventure' on the way. But I kept him in, and as he was, because he represents certain things otherwise left out. I do not mean him to be an allegory - or I should not have given him so particular, individual, and ridiculous a name - but 'allegory' is the only mode of exhibiting certain functions: he is then an 'allegory', or an exemplar, a particular embodying of pure (real) natural science: the spirit that desires knowledge of other things, their history and nature, because they are 'other' and wholly independent of the enquiring mind, a spirit coeval with the rational mind, and entirely unconcerned with 'doing' anything with the knowledge: Zoology and Botany not Cattle-breeding or Agriculture . Even the Elves hardly show this : they are primarily artists. Also T.B. exhibits another point in his attitude to the Ring, and its failure to affect him. You must concentrate on some pan, probably relatively small, of the World (Universe), whether to tell a tale, however long, or to learn anything however fundamental - and therefore much will from that 'point of view' be left out, distorted on the circumference, or seem a discordant oddity. The power of the Ring over all concerned, even the Wizards or Emissaries, is not a delusion - but it is not the whole picture, even of the then state and content of that pan of the Universe."
