Or, alternative fact, they could realize that acting in the face of public outcry isn't always a form of censorship and in fact a necessary outcome in some cases to preserve ones moral or political standards, thus easing the "regressive censorship" knee jerking for everything instead of just when to actually matters.
But I mean if you want to go the "chip on the shoulder" route it's all clear.

Also financial. Maybe lesser point this time but a lot the reactions to outcries are often based on just fear of what it will do to the bottom line even if it likely often only be a short term hit. Almost certainly why Pewds got dropped and is fairly understandable. But not always necessary and sometimes causes more harm then it seeks to prevent
