I feel like the heart-shaped post-its with "rapist" on them are sending a mixed message.
Can someone tl;dr to me why Woodrow was so bad? Don't know enough Murican history.
As a white male, had I been there I would have removed all of those post-its and burned them in my privilege basket.
Dude. Wilson was WAY more than just "segregation was legal". He was a KKK semi-(perhaps not even semi-)sympathiser. He wasn't that far removed from his own times, but even then, he was still a bit more on the "racist" side than most, especially among the educated. He was arguably more Hawkish than even Bush 41 or LBJ, and that takes a lot. There's fairly strong evidence that he wasn't really pro-women's right, but caved under enormous, unstoppable pressure. It really wasn't until it was basically after he stroked out that the Amendment passed.
Thomas Jefferson was a little bit more on the "blacks are people" side than the typical plantation owner, but very far to the "Keep 'em as chattle" compared to most of America-- particularly in the North-- as looked at with his contemporaries. Wilson, too, was on the "Blacks aren't equal" side even more than standard America was. He really was a bigot, who lamented that "Birth of a Nation" was sad because it was so true. All of it. Roosevelt doesn't get the same flack Wilson gets (either Roosevelt), because both were at least pushing segregation away. Wilson encouraged it pretty hard-core.
segregation wasn't merely legal under his presidency, he resegregated several government agencies (Treasury, Postal Service, etc) that had been integrated since Reconstruction (and were growing increasingly so), and he personally engaged in an employee decimation campaign that removed thousands of black workers from the federal government while mandating photographs be attached to all future applications to allow more effective hiring discrimination going forward. when conducting the treaty negotiations at Versailles that would end World War 1 he singlehandedly killed an amendment that claimed the races were equal, he refused to appoint black ambassadors to black countries though historically we always had, and he was an open advocate of the KKK and screened Birth of a Nation multiple times at the White House.
he was a profoundly racist man, abnormally so even by the standards of the time
Interesting, all I knew is that he looked like HP Lovecraft.
What they need to do is just replace all statues with Teddy and be done with it.

Holy shit freedom of the press. Do they actually think this is even remotely okay?

Happening at my school. To be fair, the protests about the mascot have been happening since 2000~.
But it begs a bigger question that if they replace the mascot (which seems inevitable) will they eventually reach to change the name of the school/town? Activists claim they won't, but I do know that there have been idiots at town hall meetings trying to get the town to do that when I was in school.
What happens when white people are a minority, does the country become Detroit or do white people somehow still, collectively, repress everyone else.
