Can I also rant about how dumb culture appropriation is? Cause it's dumb.

When I used to post on the mommy boards they flipped their shit on things like that. I asked them if a white chef working at a chinese restaurant is cultural appropriation, and they called me all kinds of names.

The whole thing reminds me of how some groups throughout the course of history would tear down old monuments because they represented culture and history that the group in power didn't agree with. Shit's been going on forever and we're always a little worse off for it.

Man the cultural appropriation thing really is frustrating. I one time had someone claim that someone could culturally appropriate their own culture. (They were complaining about someone making tacky souvenirs to sell to tourists) When I explained that cultural appropriation means an oppressive culture stealing from an oppressed culture by definition they said I was white mansplaining.

I would love to hear everyones thoughts on that. Can you culturally appropriate your own culture?

I'd say you can encourage cultural appropriation by doing things like selling "authentic" Native American headdresses, handing out leis, marketing jazz/rap to those of a lighter hue, etc.

The thing I don't get about "cultural appropriation" is that people basically don't give a fuck about it until it hits some nerve with them (and it varies by person). For instance, all of the three examples I just gave are encouraging cultural appropriation. Most people would only deem one of them offensive in any capacity. The incredible variability inherent in "offensiveness" makes it difficult to form cohesive and consistent policies around the concept.

I know it is splitting hairs but when you are trying to draw a difference between legitimate concerns and over sensitivity I think it is important to be concise with definitions like that.

But like what about this. A lot of people who might "encourage" cultural appropriation by selling souvenirs or other things are just trying to make a living. If you ask poor people in India, they couldn't care less about cultural appropriation and are much more interested in selling tourists tacky souvenirs of Indian culture so they can eat. So whats more important in that sense?

Like I said earlier in the thread. There might be some cases with legitimate concerns. But for the most part it's a bunch of white people telling other white people to stop oppressing people who didn't ask for help. And in doing so they start targeting some subsets of the very culture, like in the situation I just described or the own above about appropriating your own damn culture.

Or maybe we could acknowledge the fact that the entire concept is bullshit. "Culture" is nothing more than a set of ideas, and no human being (or a group of them) can claim ownership of an idea. Ideas spread. It's not a big deal. If anything, they should take it as something to be proud of. They had the idea first, and other people thought it's a good idea.
