I thought kids of families making below a certain amount of annual income got free lunches? Was that just an NYC thing? This shit sounds completely fucked up and had no idea it was going on.

Not just a NYC thing, I live in central NY and got free lunches when I was young.

It's national, second largest social service program after TANF IIRC. The problem is that adoption is substantially less than 100% (at the 95% of schools that provide lunches the program can apply to) due to some combination of parental shame and incompetence.

So that story is basically laying out that the kids of parents who are either too proud to apply for help or don't have their shit together enough to do so are being shamed at school.

Yeah I was going to say yesterday that my school had cheap/free lunches for students if their parents applied for it. I think it was like $.35 or less for the school lunch with the program. I went to public school in NY as well, so it's not like we had additional funding from whatever source that private may get (grants, donations, tuition, etc.).

In florida a lot of the smarter schools make a conscious push for parents to sign up for the program. More $$$ for the schools and all you have to do is be middle class and sign a few papers. If any child is starving while actually at school, it's the parents fault and they should be ashamed. Idk where the pressure comes from to collect on these debts as I can't imagine a principal turning a blind eye to shaming poor kids. Even the lunch ladies harass the teachers for money over the kids lol.

Where I grew up in PA had a similar program, but so many of the students qualified they found it easier to just give free lunch to everyone

The article made it sound like they still had to provide even if child wasn't in program and parent wasn't paying. And if child isn't in program school doesn't get the money to feed them so that became a loss for the school that had to come out of the lunch program itself or the vending machine funds which aren't exactly running a huge profit. Which is where the pressure to collect comes from.

Shane Bauer is fuckin awesome. That is a crapload of great content. He's on an episode of Chapo where he talks about going undercover with border militias. Its amazing stuff.
