Naw, the implication is actually that the conservative PCoeple also focus on things that offend them. Now that they're not focusing on black people, they'll spend their time being offended by people who fail to sufficiently respect Christmas' omnipresence.

That advice is literally 'I don't care what has happened to you get over it' because guess what. Some LGBT want some form of acceptance because being denied social interaction because your being yourself sucks. And some people have killed themselves because their family wouldn't acknowledged them after they came out of the closet.

You can't make people care. You can persuade them to care, but you can't make them care.

I suppose it speaks of a hierarchy of needs and rights, and the need to feel secure to me is less than the ability of individual expression (who decides what's good expression and bad expression?).

How should an individual respond to something? I say that sarcastically, because I believe as humans all responses are 'valid' behaviours. You could go outside and shoot someone right now. But what if I wanted to install a chip that physically prevented you from doing that? Who would install that? Who makes the rules? In our life, if you do that murderous action, there will be consequences based on probability and factors: you might get away with it, but chances are you wont. By taking away the ability to do the action from someone, you are robbing them from the ability to express humanity, of free will, of autonomy. While i'm jumping all over the place and bringing up many related topics, I believe Black Mirror and other sci fi related shows explore this topic well and better than me (dystopian governments who can regulate thoughts & memories, Uber like rating systems where prison sentences can happen if you don't conform).


Nowhere in humanity or life are we guaranteed happiness or security, they are individual states of mind that are varied from person to person. If anything life is a constant struggle where for survivability we make rules and form bonds with like minded people, that help defend us from the others. Sometimes our team is winning, sometimes it loses, but life continues.

Bad things happen in the world. Bad people exist. We respond to bad things; we learn from them. Life is a struggle. Outside of a therapy situation, safe places don't exist (a collective plea to give up living in reality and living in a fantasy; the irony of the type of forum I'm posting this on isn't lost on me). And please let's not do a 13 reasons justification of death by suicide, if anything that furthers my point in that seeking validation from people that the individual has no control over, you expose yourself to giving them power. (Think of how many fights you had with your ex, where if you had just not responded you would have starved that fire rather than feed it?). Now, I shouldn't have to say it, but of course whether as a response to environmental, drugs, or genetic factors sometimes stressors make it so that it is incredibly hard to resist the act of attempt of biological death through suicide, but we can't delude ourselves into thinking that it was the other person who did it. They may heavily influence it (and should be judged accordingly as a consequence of their behaviour), but the act itself was still done by the individual.

In other vague metaphors, Oscar wilde talks about the benefits of suffering when being imprisoned by the public that adored his plays. He used the metaphor of how his reality and learning came from eating the 'beautiful' fruits of the forest of life. The bananas...the mangos...the...pomegranates of the world. The parties, the sex, the fame etc. It wasn't until he was imprisoned that he realised that he had only been eating from the beautiful trees, and not the dingy grey fruits and vegetables like potatoes and mushrooms. From suffering he learned more about him and what was important to him. He knew he wasn't wrong for being gay, and he suffered for it, but he chose how to respond to that suffering, and he empowered himself with it. I don't condone the suffering, fuck its awful, but, the world is kinda an awful place....and kinda a great place. Human's greatest gifts come in our ability to adapt to mostly any environment.

It's hard when we the individual have little control over our environment, when it has so much control over us, when we're subject to waves of happiness and sadness, or torment and ecstasy that is controlled by other people. It's easy and natural to respond to disrespect of your individuality by wanting to impose control or punish those that do it; you can do it if you want to, more power to you, but prepare for consequences. Good and evil exist in a sense of who and how they are contextualized (whats that phrase about thinking making it so?) and history has shown us that even simple 'truths' can be flipped.

Ultimately for me it comes down to a split in usage of energy; should I spend my time trying to convince/make/force people through shame/guilt/etc to change their behaviour to my outlook?
Or do I try spending my energy on improving myself, and with kindred loved ones? You can't make people love you, but you can love yourself.

There's beauty and pain in the world, and whether we like it or not, our reality is formed from forces outside our control. We're on this earth for a short amount of time, remembered for a short amount of time (100 years? 150? mostly), and then forgotten about in the annals of time. Stop trying to control things you can't control.

Focus on yourself, be willing to defend yourself and your loved ones, live and experience life, suffer consequences, but don't delude yourself into thinking you have some righteous power or moral authority to convert others to your way of being. Don't become a tyrant to your fragility.
