To be fair, math can be dehumanizing in a way. for instance, there's a massive difference between a soldier seeing their comrades dying right where they are and the military commander reading a statistic of how many soldiers were lost, how many enemies were killed, etc. that isn't to say that math is evil, but there can be a danger in seeing a report and viewing human lives as just another statistic, instead of realizing that "hey, these are real people who had their own hopes and dreams, and will never realize them". it can detach the commander from the reality of war and cause them to start treating lives as just another expendable. That isn't to say military commanders are all inhumane bastards, but it can be a potential danger. a good commander realizes this and avoids that pitfall, even though it hurts to face the reality of what those numbers truly represent.
i do feel that math should be taught in a better way than what we learned in class though. the subject is always presented as dry, boring material that only a special breed of person can learn to enjoy. this is wrong. other science teachers don't put up with this shit. even physics teachers run experiments in class to show how those numbers aren't just symbols on paper but represent interesting things. yet math teachers just hammer the dry material, over and over, without making it palpable. i kind of wish we had an Alton Brown of math, someone who could make math interesting, funny, engaging, just as how A.B. caused a love of cooking and the science behind it in hearts everywhere.
Then again, when i mentioned issue to my calculus teacher asking for feedback on how to make the class better, he looked at me like i was a freak and said that "math isn't supposed to be interesting", and the only way to learn it is by practicing. I couldn't get it into his head that yes, practice makes perfect, but it's a heck of a lot easier to get people to practice what they love than what they hate.
td;lr math teachers are soulless automatons who hate fun
Got straight As in math all through high school and up to college algebra level, hated every minute of it though. Became a communications major instead and now I'm broke, I totally blame math.
i wander with aim thankyouverymuch
You can keep your stupid crabs and scorpions. Fucking goat fish is where it's at.
water jugs represent!
also words can be dehumanizing too. maybe people should just shut the fuck up so they don't perpetuate the culture of dehumanization that words have engendered over the last ~50k years.
all you signs would be nothing without us Virgos. We cunts keep you all grounded
Sorry I'm some dumb scale that's tilted.
I can confirm I am a soulless automaton who hates fun.
Math is a muscle. If people don't use it, it gets weak and spongy and building it back up takes tons of work. Naturally, some people enjoy building this muscle, keeping it tight, and using it often. Other people would rather let the muscle atrophy. Couch potatoes are a fact of life.
Should we blame basketball for not being interesting enough for every couch potato to want to exercise and play? Nah. Plenty of people do. Plenty of people don't. But you know, there are plenty of jobs that require a bit of muscle to do. There are some jobs that require a lot of muscle to do. Couch potatoes can't do these jobs. Not having that muscle limits what you're able to do in life. There is no benefit to lacking that muscle.
There are as many different ways to use the math muscle as there are to use any of the other muscles in your body, maybe more. If you can't find any that are fun for you, or you can't make it through basic calisthenics long enough to get to the more varied and interesting stuff, then that's on you.
PS: Contrary to what Disney channel teaches our younglings, Calculus is still basic calisthenics and a freshman level class at the college level.
that's a terrible example. for instance, i hate sports because i don't see a point in hurting myself over some stupid ball. do i hate exercise? for the most part, but tai chi is an exception. i find martial arts fun because it has a point, its challanging, and you keep learning new techniques and improving on them, rather than... tackling each other over a ball. if you enjoy sports good for you, but it's not my cup of tea.
my point is, math is a muscle, but if people aren't finding it fun and engaging, it's not because they hate math, its because the game you're making at math fucking sucks. they don't hate math, they hate the way you're making them learn math. we don't put up with this shit with science teachers who make science boring. all in the news you hear science teachers trying their best to engage women in science, children in science, minors in science, the general population in science... but math? "you don't like it? too bad, deal with it." no shit we need math, but we don't need your shitty teaching techniques, we need a way to make math engaging, fun, and productive for the majority of the population. maybe then we can finally convert america to metric like the rest of the world.
i can't believe youre trying to suggest it's the kids who don't even know math yet who have to make it fun. they don't understand what you're teaching them, why is it THEIR job to make it enjoyable? the teacher is the one getting paid to do that. once kids learn about how enjoyable math can be, THEN they can make their own fun with it. until then, the responsibility for teaching math properly, instead of trying to ram it into their heads, falls on....the teacher.
