"Hard working, willing to relocate, no triggers"
Yall must not have met corporate America, but trolling is generally quite unwelcomed there. This is particularly true if you're in a science-y company that's trying to prove it likes women too.
They're going to be a HR nightmare. I already distance myself from everyone I work with as is due to not being able to truly read how people will react. I'm definitely not looking forward to dealing with these people.
Hell, I barely do things like hold doors or give compliments anymore at work just because I don't feel like taking the risk of having someone call HR because they misinterpreted it as being sexist or some shit.
I've learned that most of these people are proud of how they act during these events. Because of this, simply asking them about what they did in college (extra curricular activities, public events, movements, etc) can help you weed them out quickly. They admit they were part of these movements, and asking what happened will normally tell you about how XXX was a victim of YYY because ZZZ. I've already passed on many people after asking a few questions, before i even get to the technical stuff.
Forced to give this support as being true. At the company I formerly worked at, the LGBTQSOUP people had monthly (weekly?) meetings during working hours to discuss what things the company could do to be more friendly to them, and plan after work activities. I read their OneNote one time and it had detailed notes on how to log the time as if it was actual work, and how to discuss it with your boss if they thought it was bullshit (which it was).
Though to be fair, they weren't afraid to fire people from those groups for other legitimate reasons. There was a transgendered woman on my team (exceedingly obvious, basically man in drag levels), and she got shitcanned because she couldn't finish her 6 month orientation work after being given nearly 8 months. For reference, I finished that work in about 3.5 months, going at a really laid back pace.
Having an LBGT group who meets during office hours to tell the company how the company can accommodate human beings better is the opposite of a good thing. It's the type of thing you give participation trophies for and get called a bitch for.
Hamstrung by the threat of illegal discrimination lawsuits?
I'd be irked if people were using my money to hold meetings on how other people can make them feel more accepted at the company. Assuming the people in question aren't doing anything illegal, than these paid-for special interests groups need to buck up and deal with it.
I'm all for encouraging them to step forward with work place issues that might be insensitive towards people of the LGBT community, but there is a thin line between correcting insensitive things, and just, as churchill so eloquently put it, being a little bitch. This is a not a day care, it's a work place!
All this a thousand times. My transgender coworker got called into a meeting with my supervisor because she had really bad time management and work habits that attributed to a lot of overtime. She played the victim card and claim that the supervisor was harassing her. Jeez if you can't take criticism and do a better job, you wouldn't be called into that meeting to begin with.
See, and things like this are so unfortunate because it only contributes to the decision to keep businesses as an "at will" employer. Being able to let some one go for any reason, which is what at-will employers can do, is bullshit imo, but these kind of delicate flowers make it hard to fight against it when they make it so obvious that it's needed.
Straight guys don't understand why LGBT people need LGBT support groups at work.
