so true. guys with long hair still get rejected from jobs because of it, regardless of how good it looks, because society here is still stuck in the roman empire days. that said it's definitely improved since when i was a kid. oddly enough there seems to be a lot more guys with long hair in upper michigan than there are in southern cali. XD

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

No, but when it's a barrier to a race of people from wearing a style so they don't have to spend HOURS preventing everyday, that's a problem.

I mean, that's men in a nutshell too. I grow mine out to donate to Wigs for Kids every year and I honestly doubt I'd be employable if I didn't have a graduate education in STEM.

Why can't black people just suck it up and continue to look like white people accepted styles? Gosh. (sarcasm)

Gonna be honest, seeing a white person with dreads is pretty much always worse than seeing anyone else with dreads. It always looks like shit.

I actually agree with that. But here's the deal: I'd rather have to see white people in terrible dreads if that means black people get to wear dreads simply because of their hair make up and the simple fact that they find it to be stylish.

Like, it doesn't ruin my day when I see a white person wearing terrible dreads, but I can see how it would ruin a black person's day after spending two hours trying to get their hair to look like white people standards.

Let all of them wear it.

Yeah, the woman in charge of the office of the Solicitor General of the United States, second only to the ASG and the SG, is an older black lady with long dreadlocks. Highly suspect if you tell me dreads don't work in a professional environment.

Lots of people in here without a clue about black hair or the history of discrimination against it.

At least you can undo dreadlocks. Visible tattoos are much more likely to get one passed by an employer and all you can do about it is be in full body suit even if it's summer.

I'm all for abolishing antiquated norms like I expressed earlier, but I'm skeptical this is somehow a racial issue.

That's because you are focusing on the feels.

Look, for those who are honestly interested in understanding how important this is I recommend at least starting with Chris Rock's documentary "Good Hair."

    Trailer:

You'll have to find the full film yourself. It's only $3 to rent on youtube. It'd be illegal for me to link it on BG.

And if you think this has nothing to do with racism, take a seat for a moment.

Black women spend thousands of dollars making their hair look nice. What black people and black culture determine is nice. They do not look at their dreads as gross, or nasty, or unkempt. For black culture that is stylish.

But our culture looks at them as gross, nasty, and unkempt because white people have said it's gross, nasty, and unkempt. This attitude towards black hair goes back to slavery. White people have defined what is "stylish" to our society despite what their culture deems as stylish. And they are getting denied for jobs because of that style. That is insanely dumb, and yes it is rooted in the racist history of our society.

If you are one of those people that shouts "racism doesn't exist anymore" then I will find the get out frog for you. If you are one of those people who believe racism still exists, stop trying to deny obvious incidents of racism because you don't like something.

Now look who's being obtuse. If it's so stupid why are you the one bringing reasons for dress requirements into a discussion that had been about how feasible/practical they are?

But since you decided to whoosh harder than Macross let's go down that path. No Military uniform/grooming are not for safety reasons. Certain jobs and/or commands it can be and they can always make them stricter for reasons such as that but as a whole it's more of a conformity and appearance professionalism thing which is why under certain circumstances (normally read no civilians or bigwigs around) sometimes even when it kind of can be a safety issue they can be relaxed. Examples underway on a sub we wear sneakers and often don't shave and fuck what our uniforms look like. Recently they granted religious exceptions for facial hair think it was largely for Sikhs but don't quote me on that. Pregnant women can wear shirts untucked. Working in the heat often strip etc. On other hand I've seen commands come down on things technically in regs because it still didn't look professional. Like guy in my division had a barely in regs fro very well maintained was kind of amazing and then another guy well we called him the badger because of how wild his hair was but technically in regs. Then at times even the normally allowed things like limited jewelry is allowed generally for actual safety I've seen them completely change their mind on tattoo policies. Made a guy actually get rid of his or cover it up even though it could never be seen in uniform. etc.

Now let's say that receptionist. Varies highly from job to job but generally speaking is in a position to be the first person someone walking into an organization or business sees. A very large part of their job generally is image. They want/need to convey a certain image as such they have certain requirements. It's same reason I've literally sweating my ass off right now in slacks and thick button up shirt with company logo even though it's stupid and mildly unhealthy when I have to go out in this 94 F weather on a black blacktop next to a machine that is putting out air in the 120+F range. If a company doesn't want their customers/clients seeing dreads so what? Unless they changed it mid employment that's their prerogative. Do the work it takes to keep your hair to keep looking like expected, get another job or keep it shorter. Note I couldn't get long hair either and get shit even when it's just medium floofy if not worked on

Well, let's not confuse our metrics. Public opinion has absolutely nothing to do with sanitation, but I have never looked into whether dreadlocks are quantitatively dirtier than other hairstyles.

I am certain that shaving your head is probably the most sanitary, so the question is how far you'll go.
