I've been keeping up with the thread but haven't had time to post since we hit the road for my parents place. Now that we're settled I can get back in making myself look like a moron.

I can't say, aside from the silly video with the girl putting twigs in her hair, that I saw any hair styles in the last few pages that looked outright terrible. That could mainly be because I don't give a flying fuck how people style their hair. It's hair. If I were to judge people's character based on it that'd make me kind of a piece of shit.

So, where I'm at, is that it's still about individual choice, but it would seem that a few other things could happen that'd be helpful to those individuals.

1. Knowledge could be spread about the quality of "black hair".
The best way to approach this is not to attack or alienate you're audience which seems to be difficult for a lot of people now-a-days.

2. Companies could look at their dress codes and adjust if they wish.
Forcing them to make changes isn't going to go over well with people.

3. Individuals harping about this may want to conduct some self reflection.

If you want to work at company x, you have to follow company x's dress code.
If a company doesn't hire anyone with dreadlocks, that means any person no matter their race wouldn't get hired if they have them. If a lot of African Americans have dreads and they are finding that it's a problem finding work with them, they do have a choice to either stop styling their hair that way, or look elsewhere for work.

I fail to see how this is a racism issue.

I'll preface this by saying I've only skimmed the last few pages, which you should all feel terrible about.

It's been established that enforcing apparently neutral norms on all employees that disparately affect some employees is a form of discrimination. Theoretically speaking there are several ways in which you could go about showing that certain grooming standards have a disparate impact on black employees/applicants. The mere fact that some white people are affected by the restriction does not make it neutral.

I don't know enough about hair to talk about this specifically, but it does not strike me as a particularly outlandish hypothetical that a "no deadlock" rule would have a disparate impact and fail to serve a legitimate business purpose ("we think it looks icky" not being a legitimate reason)

"we think it looks icky" is the reason I can't show up to my office in jeans and a t-shirt and have been reprimanded for doing so on Casual Fridays. Failing to sort out your hair situation is the same basic principle: look presentable or go find a job where that isn't a consideration.
