I get the impression you haven't worked a lot of salaried, corporate positions. It's not like a menial workforce job, such as a factory, where the second you step off the production floor you're off the clock (unless smoke breaks, fucking privileged little shits). It's nigh impossible to quantify "work" that comes in the form of sitting on your ass thinking until inspiration strikes and you write or change the 3 lines of code to fix the problem after spending 5 hours reading code. Maybe programming is unique in this respect, but I've gotten this impression from other salaried people in different jobs that are similarly based on creative output as opposed to slogging through menial labor.

As I stated earlier, I think it's just the nature of more mentally demanding jobs that you counter-intuitively are more productive when you aren't staring at a computer screen for hours on end. I never had a problem with getting raises (or bonuses for that matter) at that job.

Enh. Replace "mentally demanding" with "creative" and I think your case is better. Not that creative jobs can't be mentally demanding, but there are definitely mentally demanding jobs (accounting, for example), where you expect a very large degree of staring at a computer screen for hours-on-end.

I should probably make a point that I feel what is wrong with America is attributed to the work ethic we have. A lot of people feel they are entitled to pay without actually putting in effort. They don't think they can be replaced or that someone can't come in and split up their work among the rest of a group. They think they are invulnerable behind their too big to fail union. I'll admit my ideas on work are pre-1920.

I'll readily admit that my circumstances are very very specific and in every other job I've had, I'd agree with you.

To be fair I think your views on working is pretty much spot on based on the jobs available pre-1920 but you know there are a few more varieties of jobs that require different work styles that have popped up in the past 100 years approximately.
