I understand this is the PC Principal thread and I understand I'm being touchy but maybe this would be a good weekend to not do that. It's funny to you, but some of us have had the f-word hurled at us in homophobic rage and it feels a little different from that angle, even if you're just joking around and not using the word itself.

Current official policy from the last time sono spoke on the matter is that no word was actually an auto-infract. They are infractable when they are used insultingly, including self-directed like in Cliron's case. But it's possible for someone to use the words non-insultingly. For instance, a very lengthy post detailing the etymology of faggot and the power of deconstructive usage to normalize it the same way queer was normalized. Or when mods are using the words to explain what the rules are regarding them.

Our rules are written with the idea that language policing is necessary to reject the association of badness or inferiority with race/gender/sex/etc. since tactic approval of that association makes certain users feel unwelcome, hurts feelings, yadda yadda. Accordingly, there are theoretical instances where certain words can be used without being infracted. Now nearly every time those terms are used it falls under those terms, but again, theoretically speaking there is no word that is simply an unconditional auto-infract.

At the same time, the rule is malleable enough such that if someone was trying to skate the rules by using an "acceptable term" as an obvious switch for a banned term with all the latent malice can still get infracted. Anything used as "pejorative" can be dinged for, so we could slap someone up for saying "Don't be black/a homosexual" instead of "Don't be a nigger/faggot."

I personally very rarely infract on any single word but that's because my line for what I consider insulting is farther back than most mods. However I don't believe infractions for retarded are ever justified.

Retarded is probably the single word where the logic for the rest of the rules regarding language is not applicable. BG has a very clear history where the community tacitly approves of associating the lack of intelligence with badness. Insults based on intelligence are the bread and butter of this forum; we make spectacle of when someone goes full village idiot. If we accept that it's bad to be stupid, it's hypocritical to infract based on insults that utiltize mental handicaps. Insulting someone for being dumb has always been tolerated, if not applauded, regardless of whether someone's poor drawing at the genetic lottery has a specific name and is recognized as a special condition or is just the garden variety of stupid.

And yes this was discussed when cassalot infracted you, and I brought this same stuff up at that time.

Cliron's posts were removed, so keep that in mind. He, a gay dude, just went on a complete meltdown that he wasn't allowed to use the F word, thinking it was his right to since he is gay.

This is BG's typical reaction to this shit, and they move on pretty quickly from it. Don't make this more than it is.
