Look, cole slaw on a Banh Mi isn't hyper offensive to Vietnamese people necessarily, but it sure is offensive to the concept of a Banh Mi. If you care about Banh Mis, like Church cares about delicious General Tso's chicken, why not inspire the change you want to see in the world?

I mean if you don't care about food and would be happy eating MREs for your nutritional needs, then sure, but if you can't take a stand on food being right, I imagine you just let people walk all over you and the things you pretend to care about in all phases of your life.

The problem I have it is that a ciabatta with pulled pork and coleslaw is a pretty standard barbecue joint pulled pork sandwich. Calling that a banh mi literally is cultural appropriation, one way or the other. Again, cultural appropriation is not universally bad; this is a pretty stupid case of it, though. I highly doubt it was malicious or intentional.

Amusingly, someone I know who is pretty PC sent me the story about the General Tso's chicken talking about how ridiculous it was.

It's Fox. It's written specifically to be a "haha look how stupid liberals are" bait. It's a bit on the stupid side to begin with, so they didn't have to do that much work, though.

Complaining that cafeteria food sucks is kind of redundant. All cafeteria food sucks.

Most of the complaining students were literally from Vietnam, China, and Japan. If you went to China and were eating goddamn rice and noodles all day every day and saw a hamburger on the menu, but when you ordered it it was all fucked up, and you said "yo fuck this bullshit, you shouldn't even call this abomination a hamburger"

You'd be right. So what's the problem?

Talking to American friends overseas/expats, this is actually what happens.

Most "American food" places are fucking terrible.

Edit: To the point that it's orders of magnitude worse than saying Taco Bell is mexican food.

Cooking and food has always been about flexibility. Sure there are cultural influences but a huge factor and often what lead to those foods being a part of those cultures in the first place was availability. Sure in the modern age most the western world can get damn near anything any time of the season... but it's gunna be harder to get/more expensive than some fucking cafeteria mass producing meals is going to bother with. Don't like it stop being lazy make it your goddamn self or stop being a cheapskate and go to an authentic restaurant

Protest it as shitty food rather than "food so shitty that it's culturally offensive." Just seems like a weird intersection of "foodie culture" and "perma-triggered culture"

I mean, I was offended by the terrible imitation clam chowder that was served in my college's dining hall, but I wouldn't play it off as some New Englander cultural offense.

Well, unless you're serving a fried chicken sandwich to celebrate black history month. Then we might have a problem :/ But serving pulled pork with coleslaw and calling it banh mi sounds about right from what I remember of college cafeteria food.
