I'm sorry but in my opinion self restraint is an invaluable skill for a parent to have, one of which is directly correlated in my mind in their ability to hold off on something they enjoy selflessly for 9 months.

It is also an important trait for parents to have to recognize that even though they are parents they are not perfect and they can't and will not have perfect self restraint 100% of the time and trying to hold yourself to an impossible standard does more emotional harm to your kids in the long run than good. Parents are not perfect they are still humans in addition to being parents.

Yeah I'm sorry but if you cant go 9 months without a drink I would have a very hard time respecting you as a person, let alone as a parent.

But... if you are someone that only drinks "an occasional glass of wine here or there" you shouldn't have any issue eliminating that occasional drink for 9 months. I don't see that type of person saying "Fuck I need my occasional glass of wine!" when they are stressed.

    Regarding alcohol as a "poison"

    "The bottom line

    What we know:

A small amount of alcohol — no more than one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men — seems to be associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and a higher life expectancy."

One of them there good poisons I guess?

The difference between medicine and poison is dosage.

I mean, toxicity is always dependent upon dose. That isn't news. Plenty of things are poisonous to humans (or toxic, there's a hair split there that I am not qualified on) at certain levels and thus labeled as such, but are fine and often consumed in much smaller levels every day.

    See: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_intoxication

Despite this widespread use and alcohol's legality in most countries, many medical sources tend to describe any level of alcohol intoxication as a form of poisoning due to ethanol's damaging effects on the body in large doses

Aside from every third sentence in the article being a qualifier, I don't think fetuses have problems with high cholesterol and heart disease.

What's more, the conclusion seems to be that drinking helps with high cholesterol simply because it acts as a blood thinner.

That is exactly why it does and also exactly why you shouldn't drink on blood thinners.

what are the health benefits for a fetus? I'm pro-choice but if you are going to ingest trash that would hurt the child, go ahead and pay the $600 and get that dealt with.

Yea I think there may be a misunderstanding about the point I (and a few others) were trying to make about alcohol.

We've known for pretty much ever that it's pretty damn harmless in low concentrations and casual consumption generally causes no long-term health problems aside from people with certain predispositions.

When I made the point that it was a poison I was speaking strictly in terms of "things you do or do not want to introduce to a fetus" rather than decrying drinking in general.

There's a lot of things more harmful than an occasional glass of wine that people don't even talk about, like phthalates and xenoestrogens in plastics and meat

What do those things cause in fetuses? The effects of FAS are really well-documented, and range from physical deformity to psychological and neurological problems (aggression, lowered IQ, etc). I don't know enough about the things you just mentioned to judge how it compares to the effects of alcohol.

If you can't go 9 months without eating plastic, you aren't fit to be a parent.
