The people that are upset don't think Matt Damon is playing a Chinese guy. They are upset that with such a rich and vivid history of China, they chose to make the biggest budget film of their country about some white dude saving Chinese.


Now, don't get me wrong, I do think there are valid arguments to both sides. I am pretty ambivalent about the whole thing and think everyone is over blowing the whole situation, but granted I'm not Chinese.

I think people flipping out over Matt Damon saving people instead of getting saved is just as bad as those screaming this is all about hating white people.

Most of the criticism I've seen isn't about "white washing" it's the white savior thing, which definitely is a thing. 47 Ronin, The Last Samurai, and Avatar.

While it's understandable that films need a protagonist who the audience can step into, it often means that whenever the setting is a foreign culture the story is relegated to the trope of a white guy saving helpless indigenous peoples.

As I stated earlier, I understand the financial argument for using well-known premium actors. I'm just pointing out that when this is what happens repeatedly, you can't be surprised when people get tired of seeing the white guy save the day.

The point is that this happens a lot, some (mostly not-white) people are tired of it, and it's not just because they hate white people (in movies).

I find it especially funny that you would mention a film which was explicitly based on the true story of a white (French) man learning to appreciate and embrace Japanese culture as support for your argument of this supposed "trope." Apparently we can't talk about history now, because history has far too many white men in it.

The Last Samurai was a hodge podge of historical inaccuracies from the Satsuma rebellion slapped together. Shit is akin to saying The Patriot with Mel Gibson was based on a true story. But go ahead, jump head first into cement for your need to defend stupid shit.
