In recent years, there has been a subtle shift, on both left and right, away from the idealization of the melting pot — the United States’ long tradition of mixing and matching from the many cultures and ethnicities that migrate to our shores. Instead, both liberals and conservatives have increasingly advocated a version of cultural autarky: You stick to the traditions of your ancestry, I’ll stick to mine, and we’ll all be better off.

Many on the far left seem to prefer a vision of pluralism in which different cultures never borrow from one another, regardless of intentions. Many on far right likewise yearn for their own “safe space” for American values, or at least a specifically Christian-Anglophone version of those values.

Unless I'm misunderstanding this, I think there's a problem with the title of the article ("How Airbnb is addressing its racial-bias problem"). Airbnb doesn't own emergent racial-bias problems any more than Match.com or Uber. They created a system used by people who were sub- to consciously racist and this is the result. Humanity is to blame, not Airbnb.

On the other hand, Airbnb has always been vaguely creepy to me so whatever good riddance.
