I may be misinterpreting but I think he was talking about possible terrorists hidden amongst the refugees shooting jennifer lawrence in the face and blowing up chipotle may lead to retaliation in the form of a surge of nationalism and a leader that represents it.

We're all enough shocked as it is with people like trump saying xenophobic anti-mexican stuff, you, Tyrath, really can't extrapolate the effects a decade or two of refugee stories in the news by fox/cnn/etc will have on public perception and the way their votes will go?

We're all shocked at the support certain nominees are getting today - your brain will explode in several years of this sort of stuff (by which I mean migrating refugees, terrorist attacks in the name of islam, and further representation of "moderate not-so-moderate" muslims)

I don't have such a negative worldview that I think something the proportions of Hitler would happen. Will there be increase on racial crimes? Probably. Shit happened after 9/11. But call me crazy, I don't think there will be a mass ethnic cleansing resulting from refugees in the USA.

I think it happens much more easily and insidiously than you're giving credit

I'm not saying it's guaranteed that the US will start ethnic cleansing if we allow refugees in the US, either, that'd be sensational of me. I'm saying I sympathize with US politicians worrying about causing unrest among the people (especially if they have additional information about how voters think about the issue, speaking specifically about your MA example) and affecting the direction voters will go in 5, 10, 20 years time.

Especially now, when it's really not all that crazy to say that islamaphobia is reaching the highest levels since pre-modern times. And actually, having written this out I'm more and more thinking the smart choice is to "wait and see" what happens with global perception and the like with respect to opening borders for refugees

MA has been slowly leaning more and more to the right over the past 20 years. It's weird. Like, I can think of a number of reasons for it happening, but still just weird to think about.
