Witcher 3 was a damn good time. That's all I have to offer to this conversation.

Speaking of open-world experiences... I might need to change my most anticipated game to Toukiden 2. I'm probably gonna flip flop between Shallie Plus and Toukiden 2... probably only so excited about Shallie Plus 'cause it only recently got announced.
Also can't think of a less-than-50-second-CGI trailer that has got me as hyped as the one for Toukiden 2.
Just knowing that it is going to exist in this world makes me happy.
So yeah... let me edit that post.
Sure and I'm not disputing that. But I felt like I had far more choice with how I tackled each individual mission, side op, or just plain ol' marauding of the map with no real purpose in MGSV than I have ever had in an open world game. It is almost completely open ended, the way the world interacts with you got a "wow" out of me a few times, and I honestly felt like I wasn't being tied down to just one (or sometimes two, a binary switch) ways to do things. That's what I mean by "next gen", a truly open ended experience where the player calls the shots and gets to choose how to handle a given situation.
Witcher 3 has this in some aspects, I love CDPR to death and the story/atmosphere of TW3 was undoubtedly superior to MGSV's, but the gameplay itself is unarguably samey in TW3 and there is very little variance in how you approach quests. It is definitely what I'd call the next step in what RPGs should aspire to be, but in terms of gameplay it didn't really improve upon any formulas all that much.
Fallout 4 is fun as Bethesda games typically are, but has done little to nothing to improve itself or evolve past what Bethesda games have been since Morrowind. Is it a bad formula? No. But I'm not personally going to put it above other games that do actually feel like they've expanded and injected a bit of new life into the genre(s) just because of pedigree.
Basically when I compare the three to each other side by side, it comes down to which one offered me the greatest sum of all parts rather than which game is superior for x or y reason. MGSV felt more fresh for me due to how open and pro-player-choice it was; Witcher 3 has an unmatched atmosphere, story, and dev team; Fallout 4 is... well, it's a Bethesda game, so it isn't bad, it's just the same thing I've been playing for the last 10 years with a new coat of paint and a couple of bells and whistles glued on.
...and with some of the RPG aspects dumbed down even further.
Better gunplay though.
I had thought about touching on this, but I didn't want to start WWIII. Agree 100%, though this started with Skyrim. They've been shifting way far away from the RPG elements of their games and focusing on the action, and let's face it, they aren't very good at that last bit.
1) SSB 3DS
2) Destiny
3) Heavensward
4) Bravely Second
I'm sure I'm completely forgetting some stuff.
1) Majora's Mask
2) FFXIV
3) FFXIV; shitty ass techno goblins are the 3.X endgame scenario are you fucking joking around/why am i making less money than the massive retard who thought that trash up
4) SFV; probably won't compare to the SF4 era but hopefully they will turn things around by the time retail is due
1)Bloodborn
2)bloodborn
3)Almost never buy day 1 so never get shit games really. But if forced it be FF14:HW
4)
Ps4) persona 5
Looking into Zelda also, might finally get a Wiiu... Please be good.
the scope of gameplay isn't as broad, not too much in the way of culture/science/espionage, but the diplomatic / military / exploration systems it has are far far deeper, from managing inflation to setting a policy for native assimilation in New World colonies. also can't be beat for nerding out over history, watching the Burgundian vassals swear fealty to Austria after the King of Burgundy is slain in battle against the Crown Prince of France is the best
1) Favorite game you played for the first time in 2015: The Witcher 3 (hard to choose between Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3, there's just something about Fallout, but, I haven't had as much of the wry humor in Fallout 4 yet, and some of the changes irk me to no end, had to apply several mods..)
2) Game you played the most in 2015: Final Fantasy XIV
3) Biggest letdown: Final Fantasy XIV
4) Most anticipated future release: FFVII (if it doesn't count, Cyberpunk 2077)
After reading thread I guess I should buy The Witcher 3.
1) Destiny
2) Hearthstone
3) Destiny/FFXIV
4) Zelda, FFXV, WoW Legion
1) Favorite game you played for the first time in 2015: Batman Arkham Knight
Though I didn't really enjoy Arkham City this felt closer to Asylum (the best still imo of the franchise). Of course it helped that I played it on PS4 and did not have to deal with the PC drama with this title.
2) Game you played the most in 2015 (Destiny and FFRK, amirite?)
Destiny yup. It's just a joy to play and have good fun with friends and even random players. Sometimes it amazes me how Bungie can have shit in their (no subscription) game that's more fun than any of the endgame of FFXIV. Which says more about how shitty Square is handling FFXIV than how Bungie is handling theirs. Which brings me to 3.
3) Biggest letdown
Heavensward, hands down. Besides the obvious shit repeat of the 2.0 endgame model I even thought the story was shit. Half the shit of the 2.55 cliffhanger was backpedalled halfway into the Heavensward story and the one thing you actually fucking did in Heavensward (killing Nidhogg) was nulled in the end. I thought the endfight of the story was utter shit as well, had no sense of tension ever. I was also hoping for 8 man dungeons (I liked Prae and the other one) in the final stretch of the story like 2.0, I was severly disappointed. Took a week to do all the shit the rest of the game had to offer (except Alex savage, because fuck statics) and I didn't even play daily. Biggest waste of 18 bucks for the expansion and 10 bucks of subscription.
4) Most anticipated future release
No idea really, FFXV, FF7 remake, KH3 perhaps? Sure as hell not the new Mass Effect game (yup still bitter about the last 10mins of ME3).
Playing FFXIV most days has kinda fucked with my playtime to even work on my backlog or check out other releases.
1) Rocket League
2) Rocket League (excluding MMO playtime)
3) FFXIV: Heavensward
4) EDF 4.1
Doesn't help that both EDF2 V2 & EDF4.1 both come out in two weeks and I'm sure to sink a ton of time into those. I've also regretably not put that much time into Bloodborne (Every Souls game always takes awhile before it hooks me) which would have been contender for most hours sunk.
1) MGS5
2) MGS5 alot of fucking fun. have not enjoyed open world this much since Red Dead Redemption and the Stalker Series
3) MGS5much cut content
4) SF5 tho... honestly blade and soul will get more time
1) Favorite game you played for the first time in 2015
Witcher 3
2) Game you played the most in 2015 (Destiny and FFRK, amirite?)
Witcher 3
3) Biggest letdown
Arkham City (PC version, womp womp)
4) Most anticipated future release
DOAX3
So super question.
I'm looking at >
MGSV
Withcer 3
Fallout 4
as possible purchases this Black friday from PS+ deals... I can only afford 1, maybe 2... if you had to pick 1 what would it be? I'm just having a hard time deciding and they all sound fun.
Witcher 3 > MGSV > Fallout 4
But also each one is a rather different open world game. So also depends on what you're looking for.
Witcher 3 = Fantasy
MGSV = Espionage etc etc
Fallout 4 = Post apocalyptic world
Witcher 3. Combat was a bit rough around the edges, but I haven't been pulled into a game's story like that in a while. Side quests actually had weight and made you give a damn about what you were doing.
I'll ask the same question as Karbuncle but with different games.
Beyond Two Souls (Heard game was a bit clunky for PS3, dunno how much it changed for PS4)
Batman Arkham Knight (Didn't play the other 3)
AC : Syndicate (Didn't enjoyed many AC after Eizio (aka III and unity), but didn't play Black Flag and Rogue)
