Winter 2016 Anime Season Thread

It's pretty long (45 mins), but I recommend rewatching the first episode of Showa Genroku after knowing what we know in the recent episodes. I picked up a lot of things that we obviously didn't know to look for on the first watch.

First half of the EP was wholly original to the anime and I think it wrapped up the show pretty well. Obviously they only had like 12 minutes to tie up 50,000 lose ends that didn't really need to be there but whatever. Would literally never be able to make attempted murder stick on someone holding 150lbs with one gloved hand cuz 'it slipped' could never be ruled out, even with 5 people watching from 50ft below, so that was pretty dumb. And like literally Satoru was the one who threw himself off the edge. Still, whatever. Good for rushed ending I guess.

Second half they did really well. I was worried right up until the last scene that they were just gonna blast Airi the fuck out of the final EP like they blasted her out of EP11 and I was gonna be super annoyed, glad they didn't. Airi MVP.

All of the above plus:
Prince of Stride - HS sports club show with a really good story tie-in near the end that made the series. And excellent animation. 8/10
Pandora - Okay, yes this is a tough one. Super cute, borderline yuri androids. And for the entire middle of the series they do odd jobs to build character. The last 4 episodes are really awesome tho. 8/10
Myriad Colors - Good show with some really neat ideas within the plot and good animation, but very episodic until the last few episodes. 8/10
Sekko Boys - Funny anime short. Never did we think sculptures that don't move would have so much emotional range. 8/10
Grimgar - This has been a weird one. Show's very slow, but emotionally gripping. 8/10 so far, depends on finale.

She and Her Cat managed to give me more feels in 4 episodes over 25 minutes than pretty much any other show I've watched. God damn.

The ending would lead to a second season I hope but I've been burned on other anime that have had similar endings that leave stuff unresolved meaning a second season but never came. Hello Maoyu.

GATE had a completely original ending, so any S2 would have to change the plot.

Then again, it's funded by the actual JSDF. They'll probably milk the cow for public perception.

Lmao I didnt know the JSDF had an actual horse in this race. That is hilarious.

GATE ending felt rushed and a half. S2 would be okay but really would feel forced after they tied everything up so hurriedly.

Needs more full power of military smiting entire backwoods world for full season.

When you watch GATE you do kind of get the impression they're making themselves look overly good and altruistic close to the point of propaganda.

Even so, definitely needs more of the last part.

Really thought the story Sukeroku was telling was more a metaphor for him and Kikuhiko or him and his daughter. Disappointed that it was for him and Miyowhatsherface. Disappointed not because it was bad or anything, but because it was so good and not the ending I wanted even though I knew it was coming lol

Overall definitely a decent show as a time filler but feels like it needs a second season for anything to actually happen.

I think it's more that Miyokuchi inspired him to do it, but the story itself related to Konatsu and Kikuhiko as well. Didn't think they would end it so abruptly, but definitely knew it was going to be a double suicide gone thing gonewrong lol.

Goddamn so good. I wish they did more full skits in the show but considering they can be pretty long I see when they abbreviate it. I hope the last episode is 40 mins like the first, shit's over so fast.

I agree, I would love another 40 minute episode. I'm waiting for the series to finish before I rewatch the first bit of story that's post time-skip.

Especially after last week's episode, I really wanted to see Kikuhiko and Sukeroku doing a duo-style story again. That moment was one of the best in the season so far.
