I think the moral of the story is don't put the refs in a position where it is even a question. They had Rogers with 2 people and only laterals. No reason to be anywhere near his head.

They were talking about this on PTI a couple days ago(?), and we see these zoomed in shots, slowed down, and in HD on replay, so it's obvious when a mistake is made. But yeah, in real time, when you see where the player's hand is and the movement of Rodger's head, calling the face mask penalty is the obvious call.

If it wasn't face mask, shouldn't it have at least been hands to the face.

Typically, illegal hands to the face penalties are used in situations of a non-ball carrier vs a non-ball carrier. For example, an O-lineman gets his hands into the face of a pass rusher, or a defensive back gets his hands up into a receiver's face while defending a route before the ball is in the air. It is usually not the same type of contact as a face mask penalty because a face mask penalty requires grasping or hooking of the face mask, normally a ball carrier's face mask.

I only saw slowmo, but if this is the case it should have been no penalty at all. No hooking and it's incidental. Also explains why there are so many hands to the face penalties this year. Rule change and reemphasized

Phil Simms had a better feel for the play than Caldwell - sounds about right.

Almost immediately after the face mask call, he said Rodgers can reach the end zone from here but he has to get out of the pocket. Then, the 3-man rush and the throw of the year..
