Andy Serkis apparently is quoted saying that Snoke is an original character for this trilogy and not any other existing character in Star Wars. He responded saying that when asked if Snoke is Plaguis. So...

I haven't seen the prequels in a long time but didn't one of those movies comment as to the fact that Plagius could create life by manipulating the force? I think fans put the thought together that he caused Anakin's mom to be impregnated through immaculate conception because she says something along the lines of:

There was no father. I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him. I can’t explain what happened.
