Tbh it's pretty surprising that after all these years there is basically zero crossover in competitive players between smash and anything else. Even tekken has a decent amount of crossover with scenes of 2d games that play nothing alike.

Smash was completely disconnected from everything for years, whereas SF/KoF/Tekken/MK/etc etc players have been sharing rooms for decades. Add that to the general elitism of the Melee base and it's not surprising how much they don't get along with other communities or even try to.
FYI: For those still on the fence about attending EVO or not, international flights tanked this morning.
The cost for me to fly to Vegas is only a $92 difference than an amazing flight duration flight to Tokyo or Italy.
Man none of you fuckers better be on the fence about that shit after I already canceled everything.
LOL. That was more for people thinking "Should I spend $500 on a flight to EVO?". Well, now a flight to Tokyo is like $600 and half of Europe fell to like $500. I guess it could help internationals get to EVO.
Even if I wanted to, I couldn't go now since I spent the money I had sent aside for Evo on another guitar.
At least my guitar fetish will be satisfied since I can't imagine buying another guitar unless it was a $4000+ custom shop version of the one I just got.
I think I'm going to use the vacation time for Evo on a trip to Toronto for Canada Cup. The tournaments are usually pretty hype and I'd like to be there to witness the international 5v5 if it happens...

So 801 Strider was at CEO. Could have fooled me.
who?
:^)
He seriously got blown the fuck up by the move to V. Dude made CapCup and now is getting drowned out in pools.
Idk maybe it's because of his character choice? I'd have expected him to be playing someone like Necalli or Alex, not Cammy and now Ryu.
He was a footsie/defensive player who happened to play a character that also had good mixup. SFV just doesn't have a core or character for him. People like Fuudo and Daigo are just changing their game up, playing super offensive, jumping a fuck ton, etc to adapt to the game mechanics; he isn't.
I played a long set against him. He was actually playing Ryu super-aggressive, not what I expected from him.
I wouldn't be worried about him yet, Momochi kinda sucked at this game too until a few weeks ago and I still haven't seen Bonchan find his groove in it.
Bonchan hates the game.
Who cares? It's where the money's at.
Balrog seems to be ground mix-up heavy though. Really cool to see. Maybe Strider could play him.
Last year at Evo there were so many Melee fans taking up space that people at the venue had to end up watching the actual stream of GG on their phones instead of being able to watch it in person.
Like TBR said there were pictures of it, but I don't know where to find them.
My station was relatively close to Slash's, he was doing Melee top 16 while I had Xrd top 16. He had a projector so a giant crowd gathered to watch Melee; there were technical issues that kept the projectors Mando and I were supposed to use from working so the only place to watch Xrd was on a single spare monitor that I split the feed to.
The Melee fans crowded things so tightly that we couldn't actually move the Xrd players in and out, they had to pile into my stream pit with me. The Melee kids kept coming into the area we had taped off as a no-standing zone, bumping Xrd players while they were trying to play, and in between matches they kept trying to steal the two chairs that were very obviously for the players at the stream station to sit at, my gf and I had to flip shit on them multiple times about it.
Some of this was just poor planning on EVO's side, we should have roped off the area surrounding the stream stations in advance, but the Melee fans were still extremely disrespectful about everything.
Fucking brats

That makes me sad to hear, as I enjoy watching the top Melee players, but I had no idea about the bad crowds. I guess I should count myself lucky I didn't choose to try to break into the competitive melee scene years ago or else I'd be dealing with that BS all the time.
Although are there really not any instances of fans of other games being shitheads? It can't possibly be so unique to Smash.
As a female, it's also kind of disheartening that there are so few (if any at all) female players in the top ranks for any fighting game. At least, I haven't really seen any.
@Krandor - you said it was boring to see the same players at the top of Smash every year and I can definitely understand that. But I think in Smash's case it's more like the excitement of watching "storied heroes" come back every year and try to best each other. I do enjoy seeing new blood in there but the Melee narrative seems to work well with the idea of "the kings of Smash fighting for the crown" ... or something. It's hard to explain without sounding incredibly cheesy. But as they are playing a game with characters mostly created over 20 years ago, all of whom have had very little change over the years so as to adhere to feelings of nostalgia, the top player structure is actually pretty symbolic alongside that fact... lol
There's a good variety of fuccbois across all the games, but for the most part it's isolated individuals (and CORN) and not entire crowds.
