Thread on r/kappa entitled "Thank God this was LI Joe and not Justin Wong"

Joe was fucking perfect for being a figurehead for the uninitiated ESPN audience, especially since he doesn't look like a gigantic nerd.

As Krandor mentioned, Tom covered why the crowd mic situation was bad. Namely the piping of commentators to house. There's also the fact of the type of mics we use with our headsets, which are generally for only picking up commentators. I wouldn't be surprised if Topanga was using standard mics that would pick up everything, including crowd audio.

Speaking of, if there's one thing that has started to irk me, it's the need for everyone to now have stream commentary piped in house. Unless you work on Capcom Cup or are lucky enough to do the main stage of Combo Breaker, you likely have zero experience with it. Meaning only a slim few of the current commentary pool. And it is a bit different playing to both audience and stream instead of just stream. So because of this now existent need, we have people taking their first whack at it, and goddamn does it show. For example, look at Yipes. He looked like a wreck until grand finals.

Do you know how hard it is for me to sit there and go, "Damn, Yipes was off"?

As for player intros, they did exist! Just not in a place you would expect and likely was not visible. Instead of the big ass board you normally saw at EVOs, there was a box setup over an EVO shape stage. The stage itself had a projection system. The top 8 intros had a slide and a picture that animated with the stage projection system, which would play right if each individual player was called at a single time. This was also where the character selection sideboards were located mid match. Kind of sucks though when those on the floor seats can't even see it.

I need to get some rest before I even think of talking about other matters, like the huge influx of ads we had to run.

Yo man, godlike week on the weekend, and sorry again about seeming to come across as whiny like the rest about sound issues there, lol

You guys did great fixing it up managing the situation given doing it literally on the job as things were happening.

As for the player introductions and overlays on stage, that shit was godlike. The camera shots that were above the stage really showed them off well and they were awesome.

All in all, not only was production awesome, but the TV side of things with ESPN was great. As someone in that sort of business working cameras and the background stuff, it's gotta be cool working with ESPN in that regard. I'd love to do that some day.

    Keep doing awesome work, man!

Jesus christ so much salt in this thread about Melee. Of course Armada was upset, he missed taking the title twice in a row for Melee which only one other person has done so far. The meta isn't stagnant so much as the top guys (who are apparently pedophile rapist autists) play like fucking gods which is why no one can break in and beat them. Every single match they do shit that is absolutely insane, and it's even more insane when you consider the amount of mental gymnastics that has to go on for each tiny second of decision making. If someone could come in and beat them, it would be a damn sight to see, and that possibility is another draw. But there are new tricks and combos every year that can mean make or break for a player. The way the game is played mutates much slower than other games, but it does change. Personally I love that Melee is so freeform vs other fighting games, you can even end the game for yourself if you psych yourself out and self-destruct, so there's additional pressure there.

I don't follow the smash community enough to know the players' personalities really, I just enjoy watching them play from the standpoint of someone who plays Melee decently well. It's pretty shitty if they're truly that bad as people, but they usually put up a good face onstage (except Mango, dude seems shady as hell and iirc threw a tantrum in the lineup a year or two ago). But I'm sure there are shitty personalities in every game's community. Shitty people are generally a ubiquitous phenomenon. As for whether Melee has a place at Evo, I mean, it obviously does have a draw and there are several other Nintendo games represented as well. I don't see why it shouldn't be one of them, as long as it adheres to the overall rules and its own time slot. A game shouldn't be locked out of representation at a tournament just because you personally don't like the people who play it or watch it.

    EVO 2016 - FGC 2016 Season - Forget ducking

Pretty much the community is the biggest reason why melee is being so ridiculed. You can't deny that they're all little kids trying to get some form of attention, hell at my local arcade they have fgc tuesdays (or used to because the melee faggots pushed them away with their numbers), and smash fridays, and when i see fgc, i see grown people who know how to control themselves. When i see smash community, i see nothing but little kids, malnourished people who look horrendous, and they stink up the arcade, so yea it brings a horrible taste in people's mouths, not to mention how much money the arcade owner had to spend to find CRT monitors in this day and age to accommodate to meleefags. When it gets to the point where what happened in ceo, and in evo last year because of the smash melee community, then yea they deserve to be hated, with extreme prejudice. They have quite possibly the worst social skills in the world, once i tried to talk to them when i was starting sm4sh, and holy shit you can't ask a nice question for a tip because of the backlash you get (this and the fact that miami people are scum). When flocker won evo, we had the biggest miami fgc party i've seen, huge bbq and celebrating a champion was incredible, seeing all my old buds from gg, i highly doubt these kids have the motor skills to even make a sandwich.

Let's be real tho, the community are, and have always been scum, as the years go by, i truly see more and more why they don't deserve to be part of the fgc, but money talks and that's america for you. Also in the game (not audience or money) perspective, it does suck that this old as fuck now irrelevant to me game took up a slot over more deserving games that bring a lot of hype (kof13, p4u, blazblue), which are also old games but did bring the hype the past few years.

The ESPN production was fucking on point!

Biggest takeaway for me on the weekend: R Mika has no business in SFV. This character allowed OMGitzAndre to beat Alex Valle in "honest" Street Fighter deep into EVO. Second biggest was probably that Wong had the best footsies of the entire tournament. He made Xiaohai and Daigo look free as fuck. Third, GG looks fun.

Edit: I stopped reading that block above me, after the first sentence.

I honestly didn't mind the echo from the commentary, I'm betting the people sitting in the stadium heard just as much of an echo as we did on stream (maybe more). Been to enough sports events to know that shit is almost impossible to hear when it reverbs off the stands. I counted it as a more realistic experience.

Huge props to whoever came up with the idea for the stage projection (on the floor). I know you guys said you couldn't see it from the ground seats but that shit was godlike.

ps: smash is shit and if you think the other games played this weekend don't have to do the same "mental gymnastics" then you aren't paying attention.

Yeah the stage was some tight work. I only watched the ESPN feed but the commentary feedback just made the entire room feel 'full' so I didn't mind it. This game just needs 1 small rebalance and a few more characters and I think the competition will sky rocket.

    The game needs:

    1. Rework Mika entirely
    2. Make anti-airs a thing outside of Chun li and Necalli
    3. Get rid of bullshit standing light AAs and have proper ones
    4. More characters with Ibuki type customization, i.e. actual combo options instead of the same fucking Chun Li combo over and over and over
    5. Fuck it, rework most characters so we aren't watching the same basic combo over and over
    6. Add a new mechanic and make people pick between new mechanic and V-reversal on select screen. It could be a focus style combo extender.
    7. Severely reduced input lag
    8. Indestructible song
    9. New PR management
    10. The return of proper trip guards
    11. The return of proper low profiling

    @fubarduck

Fun fact: Fuudo was required to use the "Story 1" costume after his first match because the default was deemed too revealing by ESPN.

The second i saw this on ESPN, i instantly thought, they're going to make him switch costumes. They should've studied these things before even thinking of putting this on TV. Imagine if Xrd was on ESPN, I-no or Dizzy would be banned. Hell, i'm glad they just didn't outright ban Mika because ESPN.

Isn't that why everyone's hype that Dizzy's back?

You're gonna be seeing a lot more of that kind of thing if the FGC wants that mainstream TV money. Fighting games are/were made for a bunch of sweaty nerd children and adults back in the day. They're rooted in seeing tits popping out of shirts and exposed thigh up to the pussy. Now its become tradition so much that they don't make games without it. Any game that wants to be shown center stage on TV is going to have to have alts that aren't showing tits and ass all over the place, and the FGC is gonna have to decide if the money and exposure is worth the rules that come with corporate cash. That hand-wringing is why a lot of internet shows that have become famous refuse/d to go on TV: with TV time comes a shit ton more censorship and diluting of certain messages.

When landing mp it doesn't need to take you so far into the corner. Her EX bullshit move also doesn't need to automatically take someone to the corner either.
