The two are not mutually exclusive. Proper education/training and limiting the number of AR-15 style weapons in circulation would go a long way to limiting the damage caused by mass shooters.

If I had one critique of the march today, it was that they didn't really go far enough by keeping the focus on assault rifles. If we wanted to target a single type of gun, it should be handguns, because they are responsible for way more human deaths in the US and don't have a really defensible role in hunting. Guns like AR-15s should be a gimme.
