Lets be honest school shootings are basically an American Phenomenon in part because of the sheer refusal to reform gun laws there.
Its funny when you think about it: NRA and co demand that their right to guns is greater than everything else but in outright refusing to help with control of semi-automatic weapons and military grade weapons as well as reasonable controls against keeping firearms out of dangerous hands they're actually only helping to undermine their beloved 2nd amendment rights long term.
I wouldn't be suprised if the Republican leaders looked at that protest today and were quietly shitting themselves as well as these numbers could quickly translate into a major surge for the Democrats who generally are seemed to be pro-control on guns. Fair play to those students though for pushing this through its pretty obvious alot of people are fed up with the political incompetency around guns and the pervasiveness of the NRA as well.

Gun control is starting to become a major issue on the democratic ticket as well. The Parkland kids really did make a difference on this shit.

I like guns, the NRA is bad for guns. They've stayed out of deal making and compromising for so long that they eventually aren't even going to be invited to the table when it comes to gun reform. Their credibility and value of their input is low because of the "give em and an inch and they'll take a mile" fear mongering.

I knew Wayne LaPierre was a walking mass of shit when he held a press conference about two hours after Sandy Hook to advertise guns, that's what the NRA does now.

EDIT: Pretty much what Infini said.

Should be semi-automatic but ty for the pointless snark!

Seriously though alot of these shootings in recent years have all involved weapons with a high rate of fire its why so many people have died when they do happen.

Those who support guns need to realise that these shootings every time they happen and every time people die are only undermining their 2nd amendment rights. I mean seriously the original reason it was put there in the first place was so people would be able to defend themselves in the event of an invasion by the British of the day. No way in hell anyones invading America for the foreseeable future but its obviously not fitting its intended purpose when those want their guns are opposing every single attempt to keep those who aren't responsible, mentally stable or are intent on killing their own people like what's happened in the last 20+ years in these schools.

They NEED to start being realistic and putting forward common sense approaches to the issue. They might think arming teachers for example will save lives but teachers are there to TEACH people not act as an armed guard's. Adding more guns only escalates the problem and the potential for collateral damage. Imagine if a gunman starts shooting up a school and a teacher firing back were to inadvertently kill another student in the crossfire or through a ricochet bullet? The furore from that would only serve to further undermine the 2nd amendment further.

This whole movement with the students for example is a result of one too many of these shootings. If those who want guns don't come up with realistic options and start supporting reasonable protections against keeping firearms out of dangerous hands whats going to happen is that the majority of those who want a serious solution to this will get to the point where they might get enough support (2/3) either in congress or the state legislatures where they could actually FORCE a change to the 2nd amendment. This would be the true endgame to this problem. Article V of the US constitution actually allows this to happen and if you want an example of how it could happen look at Prohibition. Initially brought in as the 18th amendment it was repealed by the 21st amendment. This ironically happened because the 18th ended up leading to a surge in crime, violence and gun crimes (ironically the last one actually forced some gun controls back then as well because of the amount of people dying). It eventually became so unpopular that the 21st was the result of it in the end.

obviously he means the 8000 rounds per minute death machines we have when he refers to military grade vs automatic weapons

edit: changing the 2A would 100% split the country in half if it wasn't already from this shitty presidency.

I'd agree with you it would be pretty toxic just like abortion, the thing is though is is a real possibility since the crap about guns tends to be associated more with republicans and Trump is a lightning rod for people right now on how bad their policies are and how they've become. A big enough Blue Wave in the next 2 years could in theory produce enough support to at the minimum change the 2nd amendment and at most override it entirely. It's why those who support guns and use them responsibly NEED to support more reasonable gun controls and close loopholes. They need to keep idiots and psychotic fucktards from getting these weapons to begin with and undermining their 2nd amendment by slaughtering innocent kids.

I think I'd look for in gun reform:
    * National gun registry w/ background checks - Screens who can buy a gun, defines who has what gun, and is associated with legal repercussions for the owner if one of their firearms is used to commit a crime or illegally modified. AKA get a lockbox and use it properly.
    * Ban on functioning handguns - Handguns exist to kill humans. Very few people actually take down bears and want a handgun for close range encounters, and I'm okay with upping the bear's odds. Again, legal repercussions for people possessing functioning handguns (capable of firing), particularly if they are used in a crime.
    * Ban on weapons capable of firing faster than X/10 seconds - X=2? X=3? I don't know. Regardless, same as above. Legal repercussions for people that possess a gun capable of firing faster than this rate, particularly if they are used in a crime.

The legal system is never going to be totally impartial, which would be a good thing for the onset of these laws. I would give a fairly wide berth to judges in sentencing to reflect the fairly wide range of responsibility present in America's gun owners. Obv. there would be ban exceptions for service weapons.

Obviously we should also do things to address the 21st century's spreading loneliness epidemic and the mental health deserts in the US, but those are non-gun domestic policies that wouldn't solve our gun violence problems.

You can't ban handguns without amending the constitution. DC tried that already.

SCOTUS rulings are only absolute until the next SCOTUS ruling on the same topic.

So when you take away guns and people fall back on bombs that take out half a city block I'll be accepting your apologies.

But they won't have to use bombs, as we've been told constantly, criminals don't follow the rules so they'll still use guns.

Ah yes, that's what we see in comparable wealthy first world countries with strict gun control. Bombs everywhere.

Also no one is realistically proposing to take away existing guns.
