Universal registration means a unified background check system that keeps people legally prohibited from purchasing a gun from obtaining one. It sets a flag if someone starts purchasing a large number of firearms. It sets a flag if someone reports an unusual number of firearm thefts, a popular habit of illegal sellers. It makes enforcing the laws we already have and agree upon exponentially easier, and if you don't think that they're difficult, look up the "Enforce Existing Gun Laws" act. It's a bill that has never passed Congress that has as its sole aim allowing the ATF to act on the laws already on the books, which they are currently shackled against doing.

It hurts no one, it infringes on nothing, it aids law enforcement, and your major complaint seems to be "but what if someday...!"

So basically end face to face sales outside of utilizing an ffl to run a check? How would you enforce the registration of firearms already out there? How would you handle homemade firearms? What would be your limit on checks before I get red flagged and put on a list?

By making it illegal to have an unregistered firearm and attaching significant penalties for the owner if their gun is used in a crime.

If we imagine that most gun owners are good, then even if they don't comply with the new requirements, it won't matter really because their guns are properly kept from hands that would misuse them. If the guns are misused and the police can figure out who thought they were above the law, drive a semi through the owner's ass to encourage other holdouts to true up.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this other than "it's so hard", and still enthusiasts won't support it. That's why this wave is hitting so hard right now.

Actually BG liberals just want to take your guns - as in yours specifically, Bartholum. Then they'll holocaust you because they're secretly Muslim Nazis.

It seems they're blaming Parkland, rather more specifically, the anti-gun rallies, for "slumping sales". So in a span of 4-6 weeks, they went from "our company is doing great, no problems here" to "we broke bitch"?? It's pretty pathetic to blame the Parkland incident for their bankruptcy.

Could've sworn the monthly mass shootings were helping gun sales.

Holy shit the true colors come out. I thought black males already had it bad enough and now you want stricter punishments for gun crimes which would disproportionately affect minority males.

Stay classy byrth smh my head

Is this gun registration going to include a tax increase or reallocate funds to provide for the necessary manpower to setup, maintain and enforce the registry? And the likely increase in prison population.

Am I going to receive documentation showing I’m registered for when the gestappo asks for my papers?

These are stupid details that would obviously have to be worked out over time. These are not insurmountable obstacles; they're minute details that can be hashed out over a few days in congress. If this is the biggest flaw you can find then I'm confident we can find a workable solution.

Tax firearm sales or munition sales, or both. Tax the equipment made to use munitions. Bam done. Make the registry oversighted by ATF, and then they can just move their anti marijuana money to this database.

Look at that I made some solid policy in 20seconds on a forum. Imagine how much more comprehensive it could be if Congress worked on a solution instead of thoughts and prayers.

You “hand waved” some faulty policy. You have one organization doing the background check and the other doing the registry, nothing could go wrong there. Flippantly thinking they’d be able to come together on taxation and allocation of funds after the last two spending bills.

Oh no this solution isn't 100% guaranteed to work in all circumstances and there are straws juuuuust close enough for me to grasp at about how it could go wrong in ways obviously no one would ever think of or address so better not do anything, sorry future victims of preventable violence.

I think theyll sign whatever is put in the bill, or are you saying they won't? I don't need all representatives and senators to be on board, I just need enough to pass a bill. Or are you saying we need unanimous approval for this? Cause I definitely don't think we do.

You don't like the separation between the backround check management and enforcement? Then put it all under one roof. Problem solved. Like I said your qualms are insignificant and all that's needed is leadership and the will to say "this is how were going to solve this problem, and here are the steps we're taking". It's a non-problem, and the only obstacle is voting in enough people dedicated to change. Literally everything else will fall into place.

Being the official AR-15 of Sandy Hook & Parkland isn't a very good selling point.

We have universal automobile registries. It is illegal to drive one that isn't registered with a state. You have to pay to renew that registration annually and pass a mandatory annual inspection. If you fail to do so, you just can't use it. If you use it anyways, you get caught and ticketed. If you get ticketed enough, you lose your license to operate any automobile.

Wow this is so hard, guys.

My favorite part is where common sense legislation that in no way restricts responsible gun ownership is explained in the posts above, the gun enthusiasts pipe up and leave. Par for fucking course. Thank god the next generation of voters are fucking woke and not voting R cause this shit is beyond infuriating.

I know without a doubt that if I posted this exact comment on my facebook that most of the responses would be "but cars aren't in the constitution."
