You throw sand into the gears, make it a bit of a pain in the ass to purchase or own a gun, and shake out some of the irresponsible, impulsive, and criminal wanna-be owners in the process.

These are the same people more likely to turn to violence (or suicide) in a variety of situations, and lacking easy access to a firearm means their violence is much less likely to result in murder, and their suicide attempt is much less likely to be fatal.

That's how gun control works. It's not making people less violent or suicidal, it's just making those behaviors less deadly.
