Would make a little more sense if any of these shooters were NRA members but even then kinda ridiculous
It doesn't have to bring people on the right over to our side, it has to only raise awareness so people are more conscious of the matter, which I'd argue they've done. It also seems like they want to motivate the youth to participate in elections, which I'd argue they've done.
Its not just about reaching across the aisle. It's also about voter participation, education, and making sure people know the stakes and players involved. If you think it's pointless to call out how much money per person Rubio gets to put forth agendas the NRA approves of, then you do you homey. But i know for a fact that the youth, at least in my area, are fucking heated and the message that Rubio takes money from organizations that actively work against restricting access to the firearms that harmed their community has an effect. Messaging matters, and this is definitely a powerful message to many people.
It doesn't work on you though cause you grew up in gun culture iirc. I don't think you see why these kids are trying so hard right now.

Let's be honest....in today's America what will actually reach anyone not already on "your side" of any issue? Serious question.
We now live in a world of echo chamber news generated to your liking. "News" outlets make shit up as it suits them. Bots spam multiple social media platforms with your "sides" message (or to discredit others). "News" outlets recycling those social media stories and vice versa so both reinforce each other's bullshit. Far too many people simply following the result of all that bullshit because it's their party's line. How many of these people actually listen to anything that doesn't suit what they believe to be true? It's far easier to just demonize "the other side" of any issue and ignore them as wrong.
You can't fight truthiness. No one will give a shit what that tag means, or is supposed to mean. If you're on the side of the tag you've already been told what it means...if you aren't someone will tell you how to make fun of those people.
Anyway, I think the dollar amount is too low. They're selling the NRA short...they have deeper pockets than that Florida only $1.05.
I think that's the point...the NRA has a shitty valuation of the population. They paid Rubio because he'll work with their agenda, and all they gave him was 1.05 per person. Imagine how much lower the number would be if they divided it by every citizen in florida. Imagine being told your representative doesnt support gun control but then found out the NRA gave him such a pittance in return for not caving to public pressure. Like I said, it's a great message and it works on so many fronts.

The reality of debates is that no one changes their mind. No amount of discussing politics to your family members will likely change their mind. Look at the debate nerds on the right (Shapiro, Crowder, Dave Rubin, and etc...) and see how many times they argue points but never change their opinion. The same also operates on the left.
Its a matter of drumming up support and drumming up turn out. If you don't beat that drum. If you don't build a network of support and hype then you won't get that turn out when it comes time to vote.
Right now because of the Parkland kids (And their support network) they're been able to hit this drum so hard and in such a way Gun Control is finally becoming #3 issue rather than a #10 issue.
Hey I spend all day on this forum no one can ever accuse me of not hearing out 'the other side'... i put that in quotes bc honestly agree with yall on more than you probably think.
You're right in general though, and I agree w most of that. Seems almost cliche to talk about echo chambers but that is most certainly what everyone has built for themselves. So yeah its hard to reach the other side, but going for extremes, talking about repealing 2A, calling innocent folks terrorists etc almost ensures that no one is going to hear you unless they already agree. Maybe thats not the point as Salodin said.
Having these 'kids' lead the debate is a bit gross to me too and Im sure ill get an earful over that, but Im including Ben Shapiro's little buddy Kyle from Parkland in this as well. No one can critique their ideas or you get smacked for attacking the victims, and you have to be a bit naive to think that's not being taken advantage of. Obviously the kids have the right to speak their minds and do whatever they want, just from my personal PoV I think both sides have started taking advantage of them.
These kids aren't being taken advantage of. They're icons of the debate.
Tried to make it as clear as possible thats my opinion
idk, I went to the March for Life in DC and still thought the $1.05 tags were p.silly.
Marco Rubio doesn't only vote with the NRA because they donated to his campaign. He votes with the NRA because (probably in order of importance):
1) He would get primaried from the right if he didn't.
.
.
.
100) They donate to him.
.
.
.
1001) He might believe in the NRA's stances (hard to tell).
I concur that people have a hard time critiquing the kids cause they're kids, but that's also the point lol. These are kids going out and putting more effort for something they believe in then their parents and the majority of adults in the country are doing. I don't think the problem is these kids are unassailable, I think the problem is people don't know how to voice their disagreement with the kids without sounding like they're against all gun regulation even though it's contributing to mass shootings in schools. Those that do eventually come to a place where they support at the very least some regulation, which then puts them at odds with republicans in power because they, and by extension the NRA, have blocked any progress on this front for decades.
Its hard to argue your pov is right/better when these kids come at you saying "nah son get woke" when they almost got shot up because you personally haven't done enough to protect them. And I do mean you personally, because as these kids are doing a great job showing, the reason were in this situation is because all the adults have done literally nothing. It's hard to argue with that when their right in your face proclaiming such. It's hard to argue with that when you have zero legislative changes that would curb the mass shootings around the country.
They're coming out the gates saying you haven't done enough. An appropriate response is not "well you're right I haven't done anything but that's ok because everything is still fine". It isnt, but that's the argument the other side is making.

This is where being against any and all regulation comes to bite the NRA in the ass, hopefully. They've been against anything common sense regarding guns for so long that no one trusts them to have the interests of actual lives in mind when they do what they do. They still say everything is fine and these kids are now the face of the movement that says "no, it actually isnt". And America has no idea wtf to do cause we know it's not ok, we know we're not doing anything, and you can't argue otherwise when innocent children are now coming out and asking "why haven't you at the very least TRIED to do something?"
No one can answer that so here we are with an impassioned youth getting ready to vote for the first time. Good luck Republicans.

I don't think anything in the NRA will change until Wayne La Pierre is ousted an the organization has to do a lot of shuffling. Really wish that org wasn't as partisan as its become.
I think the NRA will survive as is until real legislative losses start happening during and after elections. If the NRA contributing to your race becomes more hurtful than harmful, you'll see their influence wane as Republican legislators realize they should be more creative in handling the gun debate. It'll be interesting to see where the blame game goes if this dem wave survives long enough to sweep up these midterms, then keep that advantage and win a presidency in 2 1/2 years. Doubly so if it's a white man who wins as a dem. Can't blame race politics or women empowerment if neither one of those ends up dominating the presidential race.
