I don't think it should be illegal to be able to build your own gun for private use.

I mean, there's a reason gunsmiths are licenced, no?

I think there's a much higher chance of idiots killing themselves with printed guns.

Gunsmiths are licensed to make and SELL firearms. That's the distinction. If you want to make a gun and shoot it at your own risk on your property, go for it.

Even before the ruling. Regulation since forever has largely been on the transfer of weapons vice production

An alarming leap, but doesn't change much until people learn to make plastic bullets. By then it will be too late, but until then it doesn't really matter.

A temporary block to the release of downloading blueprints of 3D guns has gone into effect.

You realize that they aren't printing guns of out of entirely plastic right? There are 3d printers that can use lasers to melt titanium at 3000 degrees.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

The undetection part is highly concerning.

It just enforces the idea that we should move further towards mental health regulations than gun control regulations, since clearly people are going to be able to get around it insanely easily.

Most people committing homicide with firearms aren't mentally ill.

Your takeaway here is foolish. 3D printed guns are trash and the number of gun deaths from them is and will be miniscule.

So we should only look at options that stop all people rather than a facet of people? All or nothing, eh?

    Famous last words.

Currently they might not be very effective, but technology still grows and improves quickly. Thinking these are just going to not get better is foolish.

Being undetectable is more than enough to push people to improve on it.

so you think we should control them better

    like with gun control

It's on the internet. There's no going back. It's like trying to delete old tweets that could get you in trouble

No, because controlling them is impossible:

The guy making the gun was arrested?

    No?

People are 3-d printing children for porn?

    No?

We can monitor 3-d printing behaviors?

    No?

    Not comparable.

The controlling of child porno has a lot more to do with the source vs. those watching it. We hit those who are watching because it is giving demand and a reason for the heads to keep creating it and can create trauma for those who find out that they were victims.

This is a situation where both the supplier and the receiver can kill people.

But yeah sure, go ahead and ignore that this is going to lead to a very big problem with even more people having guns.
