That is a common stereotype in American prisons, however I don't know if theres a cutoff cause this was a 17 year old. He wasn't diddling toddlers, just one high school senior. Idk if peoples outrage meters are affected by that lol.

it's not just a stereotype, in the prison hierarchy only snitches are bigger targets than people who commit sex crimes against children. it's prolly no surprise but a history of being abused as a child is endemic among violent offenders, and any kind of marker that socially ostracizes you in the incarcerated ecosystem makes you prey for the psychopaths to rob / rape / beat. it's common enough that usually they're just kept out of gen pop so the guards don't have to deal with it.

that said guys who get hit with a statutory charge for a 16 or 17 year old can often be ok, especially if they're useful in some capacity.

I think this is kind of fucked up considering that it is pretty likely he wouldn't be charged with this if it was done in the US.

In most states (even in NY) the age of consent is 17.

Some backwoods southern states (like Alabama) the age of consent is fucking 14.

I am not defending pedos, but I don't really think this qualifies, I guess it depends on the age of consent in Taiwan.

Amazing how something like this is so subjective depending on where the act was committed.

The crime happened here. He just happened to be in Taiwan and not come back as scheduled when the charges appeared.

The crime happened in Austin, TX where the age of consent is 17. The girl he paid for sex was 16 at the time.
