California considering crafting a law that would ban the manufacture and sale of assault weapons in the state with an identical enforcement mechanism as the Texas Heartbeat Act.

    https://www.latimes.com/california/s...ssault-weapons

“If states can now shield their laws from review by the federal courts that compare assault weapons to Swiss Army knives, then California will use that authority to protect people’s lives, where Texas used it to put women in harm’s way,” Newsom said.

The Texas Heartbeat Act, also known as Senate Bill 8, declares that it is illegal to perform an abortion after about six weeks of a pregnancy but gives the state no direct role in enforcing that ban. Instead, it authorizes private lawsuits in state courts against doctors or clinic owners who violate its provisions.

The new California anti-gun effort, Newsom said, would function the same way. Newsom said he was directing his staff to work with the state Legislature and Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta on a new law that would allow private citizens to sue manufacturers or distributors of assault weapons as well as ghost gun kits or parts.
The thought is if this law gets overturned, then the Texas Heartbeat Act would get overturned. Chief Justice Roberts already commented on this when he wrote his dissent on the Texas abortion law.

Indeed, in a dissenting opinion in the Texas case in September, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. warned his fellow justices that Texas’ attempt to get around prior prohibitions against abortion bans by allowing private citizens to enforce the law could provide a model for others to create comparable laws in different areas.

This sounds like a way to make something good about a terrible precedent, the only problem here is that this illegitimate dark money SCOTUS doesn't care one bit about judicial consistency and precedent. My assumption would be they would just say sexual oppression laws COOL, gun regulation laws NOT COOL. Could be enjoyable in the time period between enactment and when they have to rule on it at least.

New York state has raised the age required to purchase semiautomatic rifles to 21.

New York state lawmakers passed several bills on Thursday to tighten state gun laws, including a bill that would raise the minimum age to 21 to buy a semiautomatic rifle.

Lawmakers also passed a bill that would ban civilians from purchasing bullet-resistant vests, unless the individuals worked in law enforcement or other, specific professions. Another bill passed by lawmakers would broaden the "red flag" law, expanding the list of people who can file for extreme risk protection orders, which allow courts to temporarily seize firearms from anyone believed to be a danger to themselves or others.

When someone on the right gets balls, they then become un-electable (for their side), so the right isn't changing any time soon.

The Senate gun bill has hit a snag over the definition of a "boyfriend" when it comes to red flag laws.

Another complexity is how to close the boyfriend loophole. The framework signed by 10 Democratic senators and 10 Republican senators says that convicted "domestic violence abusers and individuals subject to domestic violence restraining orders" should be prohibited from having a gun, "including those who have or have had a continuing relationship of a romantic or intimate nature."

But Senate aides familiar with the behind-the-scenes negotiations say Republicans are resisting language proposed by Democrats because they believe it's too broad.

The crux of the dispute is how to define a dating partner for the purposes of the rule, and deciding what counts as a misdemeanor offense that subjects a person to losing access to a gun.

Republicans want a clear and limited definition that only includes serious long-term relationships, whereas Democrats say it must be able to cover abuse in various dating circumstances for it to matter.

Of course the thing to kill gun control for Republicans would be how much they hate women.

    God, we're literally in Hollywoo.
