memories of when i actually enjoyed hw
THEY STILL MEMORIES
That track is particularly nice thanks to it being used in the ability showcase video. I really like the heroic presence of the track.
Thordan Ex was alright. I personally preferred 2.x's soundtrack, but Heavensward hasn't been too bad. Kind of wish we had some specific music for AS3 rather than the same AS1/2
A4 already has different music from the rest of the areas.
Although it's a track that everybody hates now (and for good reason), nothing in the game has given me the sense of urgency or excitement as Calamity Unbound did when I first started doing coil. The OST to Alex has made me yearn for it again, it doesn't even compare imo.
Calamity Unbound was indeed good (I still remember stepping in to help a LS/FC tank a T1 snake and them telling me what to do over teamspeak. Only took 1 wipe for me to grasp. Was tense. The track was fitting. The snake swipes hard and fast. Your HP rollercoasters.). Then it got sickening (i.e. T2 spam) (these days during Heavensward it's a treat to hear it as I redo T1-13 for people randomly... for bonus).
Spiral was also nice.
Also it sucks seeing how nice and immersive Coil was only to get the kick in the balls that is Alex (so far). I like Alex's 3 themes (background, boss, manipulator) but the area was definitely a lot smaller and less of a "wow" factor. I guess the only thing I did like was the weird angles when navigating to the boss in A1 and A2.
I remember some kind of interivew way back when, and I think it was about Calamity Unbound, where they talked about multiple versions depending on events that are happening? It was pretty cool.
I guess that never materialised?
Slightly jarring considering the main Heavensward battle theme has maybe 6 variations but they sound pretty much the same.
One more track to add to the list is Thunderer (Behemoth/Twintania/Lahabrea/Nabriales). I love how powerful that theme is. This was especially fitting for Twintania and Nabriales (who showcases a higher tier of power, fitting that you jump into a void to fight him and he uses several powerful energy like attacks, along with him sort of stopping time and space or whatever that stuff is when you inception into a second hole), and I was happy to hear it being used for the first phase of the The Aetherochemical Research Facility last boss who demonstrated a similiar tier of power. not sure what you call those dark mages, but I always loved their demonstration of power.
It did - Throughout Binding Coil, Second Coil and Final Coil it had a variation of it since they all were a mix of 'Answers' to begin with. Alexander 4 does have a different song (and the vocals only kick in when you engage the boss) but..I still much liked the way Coil did it not only content wise but musically.
I was really hoping Alexander did the same - Maybe in Midas it'll do the same since they're scaling back to Binding Coil 2.5 difficulty so maybe they'll take cues from the content design as well.
I guess that'd be Spiral then (the coil battle theme). That song does have, from what I can sound, 3 parts to it, with 1 from Answers, which is rather nice.
I believe Spiral is T3, not the Coil battle theme (which is either Primal Timbre or Calamity Unbound, depending on where). Which brings up another thing: it was mostly glossed over back then because we all thought there was going to be some sort of secret backtrack or something, but has there ever been a bigger waste of content and assets in any MMO than T3? It's totally useless and a complete waste of time, and only serves to squander one of the best tracks in ARR.
Other top themes in this game: LotA (Hubris), Frontline (Rouse Out), Easter (Pa-Paya), Amdapor City (The Scars of Battle), Sea of Clouds Day, and arguably my favorite... WP Hard (Tricksome).
Spiral is the Coil battle theme and it plays in every Coil turn that isn't just a boss room (T1/3/6/7/8/10/11) while a trash mob is engaged. Primal Timbre is the non-battle version. Both play in turn 3, it doesn't have any unique music. However, due to the nature of T3 (running with all mobs aggroed towards the end) you were very likely to listen to Spiral nonstop without letting it switch back to Primal Timbre.
As for wasted assets, don't forget T8. What was the point of that huge area? Coil could've been so much more.
All the primal themes are amazing but Shiva's theme has grown on me despite the hate for Oblivion because it dared to not be traditional. It's confusing when Leviathan pulled a similar trick with Through the Maelstrom but I guess people hated that too. As a side note, Levi phase 2 is amazing with all the SFX and Levi's roars.
Phase one has that majestic, larger than life theme you'd expect from an Ice Queen then you get Dust'd and it turns into Icehearts garage band loredump. Finger snap. Heel smash.
"Forgive them, my beloved." Classy as fuck.
Had a greater appreciation for Shiva I after the Shiva-Gration showdown.
Shiva is all right, and Leviathan II is definitely the best Primal song.
I still really like Rise of the White Raven
