BG DIY Thread - Calling all Craftsmen

Hey guys -- I am probably a level 10 woodworker in BG terms if you look at this and I was wondering if someone can give me advice on a DIY for the below creation. I think 129$ is retarded expensive and want to go the cheap route and want see what people would do in my shoes.

We can also use this thread for cool DIY everyone else has done so that people can marvel in everyone's skills.

    What I want to make:
    Centimeters for both
36.5W and 28.8L board and 18.8cm long nails

    Site: Getstact.com

Can someone edit the title to men*... english is hard.

Outrageous indeed, but that's how these artsy things typically are.

The issue here would be to find a combination of wood depth, and type of material for the "racks", so the thing just doesn't bend downwards over time.

Looks like they used aluminum similar to http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-...1947/204273954 but you would want to find a suitable width, and youll probably have to cut it to length. As far as height.. it looks to be about 1/4". This will be the trick. From what I recall this stuff can be kind of wobbly, so you'll have to find a good combination of height/depth/length that wont flex. If you can find steel, or some sort of hardened aluminum, that would work.

As for the wood backing, 1" ply would work fine, but thicker never hurts; the more the metal can sit in, the less bendy/fragile it will be.

To make it so the metal fit in the wood, it would be easiest with a router or a drill press, but a jigsaw + chisel is always an ok option too.

I personally would pick the thickest steal and wood suitable to taste to keep it from failing.

I'm not jesus but I'm like 100% sure that particular way of holding wine is going to be annoying as fuck as you constantly run into its pointy jaws. just get a small wine refrigerator.

I agree, that wine rack has Final Destination written all over it.

That and pretentious as fuq. If you're not keeping your wine cool drink ready, you're not drinking them, or drinking them right, then you're just keeping them for decorations. Ain't nobody coming over need to know you spent $350 on a bottle of wine, no one care, just let me drink it holmes.

BUT, if you have to, I would think two layers of the wood panels, with the aluminum "beam" going through both with an leg at the backside bit screwed to the backside panel. You can think many ways to attach it to the wall. The front panel you could probably just glue on really since it's just for the look/texture you want, don't have to be that thick either. The problem you need to avoid is the bending of the beams, which probably wouldn't be a problem with aluminum, not for a regular bottle. The bezel around the edge, I mean w/e there's so much you can do.

Cutting a square or rectangular hole in the wood is the biggest problem I foresee, you would probably be better off using wooden dowels or round bar stock. That way you could just drill a hole to the size of the dowel and epoxy it into place. It would simplify everything.

As for the bending, that's going to pretty much entirely depending on the material you choose for the racks, and the length that it's sticking out from the wood. The shorter you make it, the more rigid it will be, and the less it will bend under the weight.

On the subject of woodworking, I recently inherited an antique chest that belonged to my grandmother. It's seen a lot of damage over the years but it looks like besides a hinge that I'm able to repair, it's all on the surface. Any suggestions on how best to restore it? I'm not totally sure of the wood type, but it's a hardwood with a close grain.

I looked at it and thought the same thing lol. Echoing Seph's comments though, drill press or a router.

Depending on how antique it is, do nothing. Get it evaluated. You'd be surprised how much old things are worth in "original" condition, i.e. the original finish worn down over time. If it's truly worth nothing, and made of wood (in assuming), just lightly sand down the current finish and restain it. A tad harder on a chest compared to a flat table, but doable.

It would be for red wine only... I have a wine cooler that fits 36 bottles of white wine. I love wine. I will try most of your recommendations and see how it pans out. I have a wet bar in my basement, so the location is merely for show and for lack of space down there.

If watching pawnstars has taught me anything, you likely will ruin the value by restoring it!

Seriously though, most people like something that shows its age. Any reason you want to restore it to not look that way? Also its going to be impossible to give any advice without pictures.

My brother really wanted it but didn't have room for it when our grandmother passed away. Now he's got a new house but the chest ended up with me, so I figured I would do some repair work on it and give it to him as a gift.
